I have decided to invest in a sat nav system. I started looking, and there are so many!!!!! Even witht he Tom Tom ones there are different modes and looking at the spoecs I can't see any difference between some of the modles other than the maps that are inculded.

I need a nice easy to use one, and I also want to be able to use it in the US, so it needs to be one I can get US maps for, if anyone can help I would be very greatful :)

I have a 'COMAND' system which was built-in when I bought the car new, but DH has a portable TOM-TOM GO in his car - which is extremely easy to use and very user-friendly. I would highly recommend it. You can get extra maps and bits online.

If you want one built-in, then contact your car dealer and ask them for a quote. It won't be cheap but it does look nice when they are properly built into the dash board. The TOM TOM models are nice and easy to install though and seen as you want to use it overseas, it will be easy to move it around.

PS - If you go for the newest TOM TOM GO model then it comes with the US and European maps pre-loaded.

:wizard:

Sounds good, I want to be able to move it betwene cars, or I can't use it in the US :) There also looks to be a high price difference between the models :(

In that case I would go for the portable Tom-Tom one. It is very easy to operate and would give you the flexibility that would not be offered with a built-in model.

We bought a Tom Tom 500 last week (DH's birthday present  ) and used it the other day to get us from home in Swansea to stay with a friend in Sussex on Thursday. We knew most of the route from previous trips anyway, and it was difficult ignoring the atlas and trusting the Tom Tom to start with!

It was very easy to use (although there are things I would like to tweak a little!) and will be easy to switch from car to car - we plan to buy US maps for future trips. It had a problem with house names, rather than numbers, so wasn't always as spot on as we'd hoped but we're still happy with it :)

Not having had anything else to compare it with, I can't say if it's any better or worse than others, but Tom Tom do seem to have an excellent feedback record.

Our 500 model cost the same as the 300 in Halfords  We could have saved £10 buying online, but were glad we went to the store as we had an excellent salesman who was really helpful.

I can recommend the Tom Tom One, bought one last month. It is excellent and extremely easy to use. It got a lot of good reviews. It comes with GB mapping but you can buy maps for loads of countries, plus city maps, it has about a 2 hour battery life. The other models in the Tom Tom range offer more maps and 4 hour battery life.

I got my Tom Tom One with a Tom Tom One case for £229 by using a good deal I found via a website find-tomtom-deals.co.uk. I was well chuffed with the price. Just need a car to put it on now as mine was written off last month (not my fault - clown from opposite lane decided to crash into my car head on!)
