Hello! An aspiring DVC owner here - waiting for ROFR on an AKV contract. Fingers crossed!

The contract we are hoping to grab has an Oct UY and we plan to take most of our vacations in August, starting in 2019. However we found out next August is a no-go and will likely want to travel in July.

I am curious what type of availability we could expect for a week in a 1 bedroom at our home resort - AKV - if booking closer to 8/9 months out instead of 11?

Oct really isn't the UY for August or July but that is a different issue. You shouldn't have any problems getting a one bedroom at AKV greater than 7 months out.

If you are going to vacation in August you do not want an October use year. You would want a June use year. If you had October use year and had a vacation in August if you had to cancel in June or later you could not bank the points and could lose them if not used by the end of September. If it was a June use year you would be able to bank points till February, which would be well after your vacation.
1 bedroom should be easy to get, especially Savanna view.

Yeah we had a contract for a Dec UY that was taken. We know we aren't at the ideal UY for our expected travel patterns, but it's a risk we decided to take. Thanks for the info!

The only issue with the UY is if you have to cancel a trip say in August of - then you are past your banking deadline of June. So you could be on the hook to lose points if you can't rebook

I am have an October use year and absolutely love it. I like to travel in the last quarter of the year typically because of the heat (I am from Michigan). However, with that said, over a 12 month period from April 2018 to April 2019, I will have traveled in April, July, October, November, December and March. If you know you are going to book your vacations in August, try to lock in a week that you want. But you also have until May 31st to bank your points if needed. For me, that 4 months isn't an issue because I plan most of my travel at least 6-11 months before hand. But as you enjoy your membership, I am almost certain that your travel preferences won't always be in August. You will want to experience Christmas and Halloween, Food and Wine and Flower and Garden at some point. So from an October user year person, I don't think this is a bad decision to have that use year. It has worked out great for me. In fact, I have added on 5 times. I looked at resales with other use years and have always chosen to have an October use year.

Nice to hear from an Oct UY fan. :) We currently must plan far in advance - and we also believe that after a few years we will be shifting to different times of year as the kids get older. I absolutely love WDW for F&W through New Years - spent many a day enjoying all those festivities!

Just remember, UY has nothing to do with when you plan and when you book. It really has more to do with banking deadlines, and what points will be available for when you travel, not when you book, and what to do with points if you have to cancel. Traveling later in the UY, no matter when you book, is risky if you have to cancel. With an Oct UY, points from any trip booked for June to September, if canceled more than 31 days out, after May 31st, will need to be used by October 1st of that same calendar year since one would be beyond the banking window.

If you have a specific time you know you will travel, getting a UY that allows you to travel within the first 8 months, gives you extra protection to still be able to bank points if you cancel. Of course, if one travels all times during the year, some trip will be vulnerable in this situation.

For OP, traveling in July/August, with an Oct UY simply means that if you ever had to cancel that trip...at least 31 days in advance...less than that they become holding points and a whole bunch of rules apply..after May 31st,your banking deadline you will only have until Oct 1 to use up points used for the canceled reservation. It doesn't matter if you booked the trip 11 months in advance or 4 months in advance. Once you pass your banking deadline, any and all points in that UY at that point must be used.

When I bought in, we traveled in August as well..I teach...so we bought a June UY because if I did have to cancel, I had plenty of time to still vacation. Fast forward, now I am one year from retirement, plans have changed and I now travel many different times of the year. So, as I added on points, I chose different UY to ensure that when I book my reservations, I use points with the least risk if I have to change/cancel...which I have had to do a few times!

Good luck with ROFR!!!!

I wouldn't expect a big problem. As long as you book before the 7 month wondow opens. It also depends on if you are looking for Jambo House or Kidani. Kidani has many more DVC rooms than Jambo.
After the first year, you will be able to book at 11 months if you know yor schedule. Our first year, we got our points just before the 7 month window opened. We were going at a busy time and had to spend some time getting the rooms we wanted for that trip. Since then we have booked at 11 months most of the time and never had an issue.

Having Oct use year for usual Aug trips may not be the best now but as time passes, you may find yourself wanting different times of year like the key Oct through December times for which that Oct use year will be ideal.

As to getting AKV, your problem reservations are for a value or club level room, for which studios and 2BRs often disappear right at 11 months out and 1BRs not long after that. Standard and savanna view studios and 1BRs should be open at both buildings at 8 or 9 months out for any time in July and likely they will even be open at 7 months out.

Thanks for all the great feedback on both AKV availability (whew! I will stop worrying!) as well as UY. I'm glad to have discovered this forum and look forward to become an active member!

Regarding a hypothetical trip we would need to cancel after our banking deadline - are we able (pending availability, of course) to use the points to book a trip for a family member? Or even transfer an existing reservation to their name? I'm curious our options in a worst-case scenario.

Yes, if you couldn't use the reservation and would be too late to cancel and bank, you can change the name on the reservation. You could gift the trip or sell the trip. Your choice.
