advice on metal detectors as a gift

I am thinking about giving one as a family gift, but don't know where to start. Does anyone own or know anything about them? I would like a good one and figure I will spend around $300 to $400. It will mainly be used at the beach, but I don't want to limit it to that. Any advice?
