Can anyone give me advice on a good camera for night photography and for action shots?

I have the Nikon Coolpix 8700 and I'm considering getting a new camera.

The Canon 1DMarkIII will do a great job at those for you.

Well, it's true, in the absence of all other information, that is the camera that would probably do the best job at the two requirements given.

Anyway, that's an easy one and not very controversial. DSLR or big-sensor small-megapixel Fuji - F31 or S6000fd. They lack IS but that doesn't really matter with action shots.
F31 - about $200
S6000fd - about $250
DSLR - starting at $419 and going up, way up!
