Advice for split stay/DVC????

So I'm beginning to plan for our 2013 summer trip and we were originally planning on renting someone's DVC point for AKL (unless I can convince DH to just buy one ourselves when we go this summer!:goodvibes) but then I started really missing the Poly and was thinking about trying to do a split stay. We'll be going along with my parents and brother so I know we'll have to get two rooms at the Poly.

Anyway, I've done a split stay before but have never booked with rented DVC points. Does anyone know how I would go about booking this? Would it be as two separate trips since I'll probably ended up going through a rental site? Or do I just use those points and apply them somehow while booking through WDW's website? I'm in the rough stages of planning and haven't come up with anything concrete yet...my parents don't even know that I'm thinking about a split stay. :rolleyes1 Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!! :hippie:

Staying at a DVC Resort on points and staying on a cash reservation are two completely different animals that don't interact very much. As such, they would need to be booked separately.

Renting is fairly straightforward. All you need to do is find a DVC member willing to make a reservation for you. The DIS has a set of boards specifically for this. In addition, the DISBoards are sponsored by a facilitator of these reservations, Dave's DVC Rentals (see link on the Rent/Trade Board). You can get a lot of information from there and by doing a search on rentals using the advanced search option focusing on the DVC board section.

Thanks!! I kind of figured as such but thought it was worth it to double check here. I've been to Dave's site quite a bit because I'm itching to really get to the planning of this trip. I'm pretty much done with the 2012 planning so may as well move on to 2013!

We rented for BLTs and also booked a night at Pop. It was two separate bookings. In the meantime we did buy!

I've been a DVC owner for 15 years and I have done split stays that were DVC/non DVC. Everything, including Magical Express, has to be booked separately.

If you are thinking about purchasing DVC with the intent to use your points to stay at DVC resorts, I advise you to look into resale contracts before buying direct through Disney. If I didn't already have so many DVC points, I'd be tempted in the current resale market to snatch up a few contracts.

I'm hoping this will be the trip that I convince DH to buy!! :goodvibes
make sure you do your homework! The resale market is the best deal from a cash outlay perspective, and definitely worth the look. However, you loose access to several of the trade collections (like the Disney collection for non-DVC stays on points). Slip on into the DVC Mousellaneous board and have a look. if you search in there for resale, you'll get a lot of great info on the pros/cons of resale.

I'm in the preliminary research stages for DVC and didn't know about this. I'll head there right now to check things out. Thanks, you guys are great!!! :yay:
