I believe so. I believe that the AVG took care of the problem. I am currently running Malwarebytes. I did take a look at updating so that I have all the necessary patches (I followed the link from above). It says that I have everything up to date, so I'm not sure how the problem happened if I was all current. But, fixed I believe. I was hoping that running all of these anti-virus/malware/spyware programs that it would improve the performance of MSN Explorer. I really do like that program. Never had a problem using it. But for the last several months it has been running really slow and it locks up. Oh well. At least the virus is gone.
If your computer is newer you probably did not get discs with it because they expect you to burn your own backup recovery discs. The only other option is if you order direct from the company you have the option of adding the discs on for a fee. I know HP charges $19.00 for backup discs with a new pc purchase. Not sure what the others charge as we only have HP. We burnt our own as dvd's are pretty affordable. It did take a little bit of time but it was easy to do.
If you have to purchase these seperate it can be pricey. About 9 years ago we needed discs for a desktop that we purchased that was a return to the store. The backup discs were missing and at that time they would have been $40.00 to purchase direct through HP. Back than they were still including the discs with the computer so I was able to get them for free.
I agree with those that say use AVG. We have it on our desktop now and have had no problems at all. Before we put AVG on we had Mcafee through our internet provider for free and we got all sorts of viruses and issues. Apparantly our cable company finally realised that it was not working too great as a couple of month's back they finally switched over to Norton. The only problem is it is a watered down version. Currently on our laptops we are using Norton and have been for almost a year now and have had no issues with it either. I would recommend them if you are going to buy an anti-virus. We got Norton for $10.00 for a year's subscription when we purchased our new laptop. Staples always has deals on Norton in their ads so when our subscription is up at the end of summer we will probably pick up another.
When your computer becomes infected with a virus and you can't remove it with an anti-virus product like AVG, it could be because the virus controls the anti-virus program.
When this happens you need to run the anti-virus software without the virus running. You do this by running the anti-virus software from a "Rescue CD". AVG has such a program. You can download it at:
Follow the directions to create a Rescue CD. Then, making sure your computer's BIOS is set to boot from your CD (DVD) drive, you boot up from the Rescue CD. This will allow you to start the anti-virus software without the virus running in memory.
