Advice for booking hotel room with flexible schedule around Thanksgiving time?

My DH is starting a new job in a few weeks and we know for sure that he will be off for 4 days starting on Thanksgiving Day. We just don't know if his office will close early on Wednesday, or if his boss will say that he can work from home that day.

We have decided to drive to DLR from San Francisco. Never done it before, and I know that we'll hit a lot of traffic. But at the moment airplane tickets are around $400 each. And driving will give us flexibility for when we head down and when we head home.

My only problem is figuring out if we should start our stay on Wednesday night or Thursday night. If my DH gets off early on Wednesday or can work from home that day, we would definitely get on the road as early as possible and check-in to the PPH on Wednesday night.

But if my DH is stuck at work until 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday night, then we would probably leave early on Thursday morning to arrive at DLR by lunchtime. It is me, DH and DD8...so driving all night wouldn't be a good option for us. I don't think our DD8 will sleep in the car.

What would you do in terms of booking a hotel room? We would like to book the PPH through Costco Travel for 4 nights starting on Wednesday. I was thinking that maybe we could book for 3 nights starting on Thursday. And then I could book a refundable motel room somewhere nearby for Wednesday night. So if we do get down there on Wednesday, we have a place to sleep and then we could check in to the PPH early on Thursday morning.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
