my 8 month old DS has had a cough for about five days. Of course it turned into a nasty cough on a Sunday. My doc was closed both mon, and today. There are no walk in places near me and I am wondering if I should take him to an ER. His cough is so bad at times he throws up! I am worried that it could be RSV or worse. Thanks for any help you could give.

Does your doctor have an on-call number to call? If I call mine when the office is closed they give a number on their machine to call in case I need to speak w/ someone. The office may be closed but there should be someone covering for emergencies.

(If not I'd consider a more forward thinking practice.)

More urgently, if you think your child is getting sicker definitely take him to the ER. You are the best judge of your child's health and if this is worrying you get him checked out. It's much better to think, "I guess we didn't need the ER." than to think, "I wish I had taken him."

If you cant reach your dr than I would take him to the ER. Throwing up when coughing doesnt sound too good. I dont want to scare you, but an older boy died after battling an infection. He suddenly started coughing, then coughing up blood and said his stomach hurt. Seems he ruptured a vessel from all the coughing and died before the EMTs got to the house. Kids can go downhill so fast. Dont take any chances.

I agree with the others. You should have him seen either by the on call doctor or the ER. My daughter was hospitalized at 7 months with RSV and its nothing to fool around with. Watch his breathing carefully as well. If his respirations are high or he is retracting (looks like the skin around the ribs is scuking in) he needs to bee seen right away. Good luck!!

How is your DS doing??? Were you able to get him seen yesterday or today? Just wondering if everything is okay...

Also wondering how the little guy is. I would very much look into a ped. that has after hours care. Something will come up again. Our ped office always told us unless it is life or death to call then first. They will meet you in the office rather than put a child through an ER visit. If they need to be admitted, they can admit directly to peds.
Prayers that he is better.

Just following up, too. Hope everything is fine.

He could also have a form of asthma or croupe by the sounds! The signs are heavy nasty cough likea barking or froggy sound and a chest that is working overtime to breathe very harshly in and out! Croupe is very common in young boys and it is a form of asthma! My son was born with a cough he was through many tests even cystic fibrosis he was tested for thank god it was negative! the only thing they came up with was croupe! Hope you're lil one is doing well!!!

My DS5 also had RSV as a baby and as a result any cold turned into a croupy cough and/or struggle to breathe. He seems to have mostly outgrown that now, with only occasional breathing problems, thank goodness!

I hope this little guy is doing OK, too...
