Advice for a Disney trip with a couple of days at Universal

I'm curious why someone would choose to pay for a hotel room and not sleep in it? (I see the XP discount factor.) That doesn't make sense to me, but as out of state travelers we'd have to pay twice to stay somewhere else. It wouldn't be worth it to me to pay for a 2nd hotel room.

Both times our parties consisted of family plus friends, so we had an offsite 3BR timeshare exchange for the week. We spent some days at WDW and others at UOR.
