Some of you might remember my story several months ago, gosh, maybe 4 or 5 where Lauri almost hit a small dog that ran out in front of her car crossing a 4 lane highway - she drove through the median with her car to get to the dog and get him out of the traffic before he was hit and we were eventually able to find his owner - who seemed so grateful *insert dripping sarcasm here*
Anyway, fast forward to this morning, I get a phone call from her all out of breath and pretty much all I can gather from it is "you need to meet me at work.. blah blah crackle crackle static dog static fuzz crackle bridge crackle buzz snap blah traffic stopped cracklely crackle can't breathe".
So after she catches her breath I finally get the story.
She's driving to work and has to cross a bridge over the James River - a good sized river and the bridge is about a quarter mile long, about 75 feet up over the river. As she drives up onto the bridge she noticed traffic was acting funny - cars were swerving (which on a bridge is not a good thing) then she saw why. A smallish yellow lab mixed dog was running back and forth between the traffic lanes caught on the bridge.
So Lauri manages to get closer to the dog as cars make their way around it. She rolls down her window and calls to the dog which just made it run from her. She decided to drive up several yards past the dog, threw on her hazard lights, stopped her car blocking traffic in her direction and flagged down the cars coming the other way to do the same and went on a chase of the wayward doggie.
Now the dog is scared and not about to come to this frantic redhead trying to rescue her.... until - enter Lauri's lunch. It's amazing what processed lunch meat can do to help in getting a scared dog to safety.
She was able to coax the dog close enough with sandwich meat to grab her by the collar and haul the 40 pound dog against it's will in the car to the applause and thumbs up of all the cars that were stopped on the bridge watching the show
Luckily the dog had tags on it with the owners phone number. She lived about 3 miles from the bridge and had just moved to town several weeks ago. Thing is, the dog was heading back towards home over the bridge so she had made it at least all the way to the other side once. How she did it with the traffic that runs over that bridge without getting killed, I have no idea.
When the owner called Lauri back she didn't even realize the dog was gone. Apparently they leave her tied up in the backyard
and nobody had even noticed she was gone that morning.
So she did her good deed for the day. Not too bad for someone that at times has trouble even walking.
She did tell me that on the ride home it hit her that she was running across the same bridge that she always said she wouldn't be caught dead walking over because the thing sways like crazy in the wind. She called it an "OH poop moment" (insert other filterable word though
)
