Adventurers Club with kids?

Has anyone taken their kids to the Adventurers Club on Pleasure Island? I know my son would love this, He wants to be Indiana Jones when he grows up .The only problem is that this IS a bar,we aren't really drinkers, no beers at the backyard bbq kind of thing, and when I order a glass of wine with dinner DS always gives me the evil eye. Very well indoctrinated by the just say no campaign. So I don't know if this being a bar will bother him so much he doesn't enjoy it.By the way DS is an only, so he is used to spending time with adults, and is very comfortable with adults and very well behaved, he's 11. What do you think, I know he would LOVE the theming (we are actually going to redecorate his room in this way!)

About 4 years ago, we took our DDs 6 and 7 into the Adventurer's Club very early in the evening. They loved the talking mask room. My DH and I did have one drink while we were there, but you can order soft drinks (and I believe non-alcoholic specialty drinks). We are the same as you in that we rarely have alcohol. We all enjoyed it very much, and I think you should be fine as long as your son is comfortable. It is a well-themed area, but there is a large "bar" and most adults are drinking alcohol. If you are unsure but think he might really enjoy himself, you can always ask him what he thinks and let him decide if he would like to go. If you go early in the evening, it isn't as crowded and you are less likely to see people who have had "too" much celebration for the night. I think your DS would love the theming!

You will find many threads on the theme park board on this. My personal opinion is don't do it. My DD10 could certainly go with me but I wouldn't want to have to explain some of the jokes (or worse yet, have her understand them without my explainations ) They do seem to try to go a little tamer when there are children in the audience but still not tame enough for me.

You can control yourself but you can't control others. PI is a place where jello shots are sold on the streets. Usually its pretty tame until later, but you can't control the folks that started in the hotel bar at 4:00 and are really drunk by 8:00.

Personally, I don't need to explain to my kids why that lady is wearing a dog collar.

DawnaJean I think I'll take your advice since it's what I wanted to hear .We live in the down town historic district of a medium to large city, so my son already knows what homosexuals, transvestites, and prostitutes are .(btw when i explained what prostitutes were he said "isn't that like slavery, kinda?") Bright kid, he wanted to know why anyone would put themselves in that position? I couldn't give him the answer to that one. Anyway I don't think a woman in a dog collar would faze him . As to risque jokes he is usually pretty clueless, I think he just doesn't want to have anymore of those "little talks" , he also isn't very observant sometimes, guess I answered my own ? really.Thanks all.

I think your DS will be fine....from what you say, he seems to be a pretty "with it" kid. We took our DS when he was 11 1/2 to the AC...yes, people flame you for parenting your own kids, but hey...he's my son. We went earlier than later...want to say we arrived about 9ish and stayed till about 11pm. We watched a couple of the library shows and one in the bar area...it was there that I realized he was growing up because I noticed he smirked when they discussed the statue in the middle of the room. He behaved well, had a Shirley Temple to drink, enjoyed looking around at all the "artifacts", but was ready to leave after a couple of hours...actually a little sooner, but he was nice to let Dad have a look around longer. DH actually was chosen to be on stage during the "Jump up for Jinkies" radio hour show...he's a theater rat so he loved it.

I would suggest going early if you plan to take your DS...it does get more adult as the night goes on. Our last trip, DH went alone since I was having a migraine, so DS stayed with me in the room. This trip was the first weekend in June and DH said it got pretty interesting.

So, whatever you decide....enjoy!

If I remember right - doesn't the AC not open until 9pm? I can remember our last trip to WDW, waiting outside for it to open, after PI had been already open for awhile. I also remember there being a few kids in there, as well. Most seemed to clear out around 10-11.

We went one time and it was all adults and this one kid. I felt so sorry for him - he just looked miserable. It can get kinda racey there but I gues that is later at night. I like what someone else said - that you can't control others.

My DS is only 8yo now so I wouldn't take him but it might be fun when he is 15 or 16yo

We took our DS when he was 8. He is a New Yorker, plays jazz in bars in the Village (no really...http://www.jonathanjazz.com) and when he played late night on Bourbon Street in NOLA he claimed that he didn't see anyone that was drunk (despite two people being virtually carried past us...). He has also been to some of the theme restaurants such as Jekyl and Hydes in NY where the interaction is similar and people drink with dinner.

He loved the characters and the acting. We went from 7:45 or so (after watchingthe first set at the Jazz club) till 9. They did ask him during one of the interactions if he spent alot of time in bars and he of course said, "yes".

So it seems to me that a city kid, still lacking some observation skills, should do fine in the 7-9 slot. Your mileage may of course vary but keep you eyes and ears open.

We will be going again this week.

The club usually opens at 7 with most shows starting at 7:30 except when they have an event and then it opens at 9.

Having taken my girls to PI when they were that age (and since then), I have to agree with the previous posters that your son will probably be just fine. We have been to the Adv. Club before when it was so darn boring that we had to leave to FIND excitement, so be prepared for that! Personally, as an individual raised in the very politically incorrect 1960's, I can say that I saw much worse behavior in the local bowling alley that my parents used to drag me along to than most any club at PI. Bottom line ...... follow your motherly instincts and your own moral compass and you'll be fine.

I take my son there with me, not often, but sometimes. He loves it and we go early. If some out of control drunk folk come in, we leave.

They may pick on you for having the kids there, and they may single out the kids and make them a central part of the show, or they could do both or just leave you alone...just depends on who is in the cast that night. But of all the places at DTD you could take a kid, this is probably your best bet, this or the comedy club across the street but you spend half the night waiting in line to get in, come back out, wait to get in again. You can just sit in the AC and enjoy the show.

Also, any "blue" humor generally doesnt start til later in the evening and even then, its still Disney.

I went to the Adventurers Club for the 1st time in years, back in June. When we arrived at just after opening, there were quite a few families with children. There were even some infants there. The jokes were silly and I found nothing offensive. We only stayed long enough to experience each room. I don't drink alcohol and I did not feel pressured nor offended by anyone else around me. No one will look twice at what you are or are not drinking. Everyone's there to just have fun.
