i know the point of having a home resort is to own part of that hotel, and that your monthly dues keep up the hotel..... but can someone explain this whole "home" thing a little more?? thanks!

at your home resort you can book there at 11 months out. If you wish to stay somewhere other than your home resort, you would have to wait until 7 months before your trip. At times it can be difficult to get what you want at 7months.

The other advantage is dues. If you really don't like BWVs (which has pretty expensive dues), you really shouldn't own points there - it will be more expensive and you won't take advantage of the home resort window.

There are people who prioritize low dues over booking window - they might not find "home" to be their favoritest resort ever, but its low dues and they have enough luck switching at seven months to be happy with the arrangement they've chosen.

As others have said, one of the biggest advantages is the home resort booking window. But, you must be able to book your vacations during that window to make it matter. If you don't routinely plan more than 7 months out, then home resort advantage becomes less important.

Having the 11 month booking window can be very important for certain kinds of rooms and a number of times a year. If you want any of the following, you should assume that you usually need the 11 month window at the particular resort: (a) Grand Villas anywhere; (b) BWV boardwalk or standard view; (c) AKV concierge and potentially value point cost rooms; (d) BCV or VWL many times of year (any busy DVC times of year) because they are the smaller resorts; (e) BLT Magic Kingdom view and probably standard view. Unknown yet whether Tree-House villas at SSR will need 11 month window often. For particular times of year, the 11 month window may be needed to get anything at any resort, except possibly SSR and OKW -- Christmas week, month of December, other holiday times, spring break weeks. During food and wine fest at Epcot (late Sep to early Nov) you can have issues getting BWV or BCV 7 months out.

Also, the 7-month window can be a race many times of year. There are so many trying to switch (particularly from the very large resorts, SSR and to some extent OKW which combined have more than 50% of all owners) that your calling exactly 7 months out to get other than your home resort is becoming more and more important.

The second factor, as noted above is dues but purchase price can temper that consideration. BLT has the lowest per point and will likely continue that way but its current purchase price is high, whereas SSR has dues in the middle of the pack but, particularly in resale, has the lowest purchase price.

As an SSR owner, I personally prefer the lower dues - and I have never had a problem getting something else 7 months. I did do a split stay once because I changed 4 months out but overall that did not really bother me. I do not have one to die for place I have to stay each time. I am at WDW, and not at home, so that is enough for me.....

As its been said, at your home resort you can book 11 months out from your stay. For example. We were able to get a GV at Boardwalk, our home resort, at the 11 month window from 12/24-1/2/08 for our family Christmas gathering. I booked day by day with no problems. This was our GV in the white box.
