Adult tonsillectomy trip report

My doctor didn't tell me to rest. He told me not to exert myself. We didn't delve deep into his reasoning, but I assume that he didn't want a BP spike to cause massive bleeding. For that reason, while I have been active, I have been careful not to exert myself.

Also, I fail to see why I should be lazing around in bed if I don't feel bad. Instead, I feel that I should be getting whatever done that I can if I'm feeling well. The same goes for my eating. This will allow me to have a higher energy level if those bad days ever actually materialize.

I agree with the eating. I had one wisdom tooth cut out. I was advised against eating, I'm guessing to avoid getting food in the socket. But the pain meds made me sick without food and honestly, I was hungry. So I ate solid food. I kept the socket clean and felt so much better having been able to keep my energy up.

Good luck with further recovery.

Never had my tonsils removed......

Do they have to remove the stitches or do they dissolve on the own? If so, how long before they dissolve?

Both of my daughters had their tonsils out and while I'm no doctor, lol, I think the fact that they ate as soon as they could really helped with the healing.

That's seems odd to me. Part of any recovery process is adequate rest. No, I am not a doctor, just someone who has had surgery and the wife of someone who had the exact same surgery as you.

To each his own and I hope that your healing goes well.

Yesterday came and went. Throat was sore and I couldn't drink anything.

Taking it easy didn't happen. I spent the first half of the day removing wallpaper as we have a drywall/paint guy starting today. The second half was spent with the kids. Props to my two-year old daughter who accepted an hour of cuddle time watching Special Agent Oso in lieu of more involved play while her younger brother napped.

I'm not sure what to do about the pain meds. I went eleven hours overnight without taking them and still was able to sleep. I only woke up a few times. (I've been sleeping in a recliner as i read somewhere that keeping elevated helps.) I definitely think that I will not take the meds overnight any more as that went pretty well. During the day, I'm not sure if I should space them farther apart or reduce the dosage. I'll probably reduce the dosage. Hopefully, that will do away with the sweats/chills that the pain meds are causing.

My energy level has not been too impressive, but given that I have been subsisting on a few servings of jello and a couple of Popsicles for the last few days, that's not a big surprise. With any luck, my ability to drink will return soon and I can start dumping in calories. Many people report that the discomfort gets worse after the first few days after surgery. I wonder if people just aren't getting more run down so they are being affected more by the same or similar discomfort. I guess that I'll know the answer to that in a few days.

I had similar surgery four or five years ago and spent three days on the couch, per doctor's orders. Overdoing it won't do anyone any favors, least of all your wife.

The question is, what is 'adequate'? I sleep full nights and my energy level is good. Very good now that I am able to eat and drink.

I spent a day in the hospital and the other two days and more are behind me with no apparent negative effects.

No stitches.

The surgical area is cauterized.

A scab forms, which is usually comes off after a week or so - and thus the possibilty of a late bleed, so be careful, sbell11!

So I woke up this morning with a sore throat. I went through my normal morning routine, drove to work, and took a pain pill. My morning was uneventful. I cancelled the afternoon staff meeting and left work at lunch time to 'get some rest'.

I went to Panera for a cup of soup. They were really busy so I ordered it 'to go'. They handed me my bag o' grub and I made for the door. On the way, I found a table, so I plopped down and looked into my bag. What I found was a bit of heaven; an awesome piece of crust bread was sitting atop my cup of soup.

My options were clear. The smart move was to ignore that bread and eat my soup. However, I have never in my life been able (or even tried) to avoid such greatness and I didn't do it today, either. I dipped that chunk of crusty bread in my broccoli cheddar soup and gobbled it down. It was so incredibly awesome.

I then went to get a few hours of rest. Fully rested and full of cherry icee, I made my way toward the house a few hours later. (Martin Sheen made the movie awesome, in my opinion.)

Our two year old somehow determined that the family would be eating dinner at Steak-n-Shake. (Their typical horrible service will hopefully never again allow that to be an option.) A review of their menu really found no safe options. The smart move would have been to order a glass of water and eat something at one after the kissers in bed. Smart moves are never fun, so I ordered a double cheeseburger, cup of chili, and a glass of cherry limeade. It was not an awesome meal, but I ate it without injury. Swallowing was a pain.

The day started out normally. I got up, had a sore throat, did the morning thing, went to work, took pain meds about 8:30am. I ate scrambled eggs, sausage links, and a biscuit for breakfast. I gave up on the sausage. Not so much because it was spicy and causing my throat to sting a little, but because it just wasn't very good.

I left work at lunch as we had promised to take the kids to the zoo. Everyone mostly enjoyed the zoo, although we did get trapped in a large downpour for a bit. The kids especially liked the carrousel and the baby giraffe.

After the zoo, we picked up Cathy's car from the body shop, hung out while Jake took a nap in the car, ate dinner at Culvers and headed home. At Dinner, I attempted what I thought as a fairly safe bet: pot roast sandwich, mashed potatoes, and a Pepsi. The mashed potatoes were pretty good and went down easy. The Pepsi stung a bit, and I gave up on the sandwich after two bites. It was neither as juicy or as tender as I had hoped and was rather painful and unfulfilling to eat, so I stopped doing so.

I ended up not taking my meds until 8:30p and again just a minute ago.

All seems to be going well. My throat remains sore, but not even close to unbearable. I've been eating a much greater variety of food than I expected to be able to. Although I still look forward to a BLT and a good meatball sub (added to the wish list yesterday is pizza hut's garlic bread pizzas and today a really good Reuben.

Day 8ish.

Woke up with a sore throat. Same as the last several days. Got ready, went to work. Had pain meds at about 7:30a.

Pasta salad for brunch. A green onion got stuck in my throat. Not fun.

Beef stew and soft rolls for lunch. The beef was too tough, but cut it up small and take small bites and all was good. Rolls were soft, but take anything but small bites and they hurt going down.

I was beginning to feel rather poorly around 5:30p, so i took some pain meds.

A sandwich for dinner a couple hours later seemed like the best choice from a ton of bad ones. It was just a bad choice.

I took some more meds around 11p as the pain was starting to go to my jaw and ear.

Let's see what tomorrow brings.

Well, I've always heard the saying "it gets worse before it gets better". Maybe this will be the worst of it.

What a strange weekend.

Sarah learned that she could climb out of her bed last week, so we went to Babies R Us (BRU) to order the conversion kits to convert her crib to a toddler bed and then later to a full-size bed. It turns out that her bed is being discontinued on the cherry finish so they don't have the conversion kits in the warehouse and ordering them will take twelve or more weeks. We certainly can't wait that long, so we searched out the items in other Babies R Us stores. We found the toddler bed kit in Douglasville, GA and the full-size kit in Chattanooga, TN. Having them shipped from those stores to our local one surprisingly would still take weeks, so ROAD TRIP!!!!

Friday evening about 9pm, we left our house in Franklin, TN on the 4.5 hour trek to Douglasville. Cathy drove nearly the entire way as I was super exhausted. Somehow, we didn't get in bed at the hotel until about 5:15 am. I had gone probably 15 hours between meds and the throat pain had migrated to my jaw and ear. While far from unbearable, it was definitely bothersome.

Saturday, we were up at ten and on our way. We ran by BRU and picked up the toddler kit and then we visited the Atlanta Zoo. That was quite the sub-average zoo and was filled pretty full with seriously rude people, so I'm glad that it was just a side trip rather than the primary mission. Sarah and Jake loved the train and carousel, so that made it a worthwhile stop.

I took over driving duties from Atlanta to Chattanooga and then on to home. The kids were worn out from two-days on the raod and slept nearly the entire way home. We were fearful that they would then be up all night, but they ended up sleeping just fine, happily.

All three days, I ended up just having pain meds once in the morning and then again in the late evening. The pain is better than it was late last week, but the tickle in my throat is definitely bugging me more. I'm mostly not worrying much about what I eat, but I have noticed that food that is a chore to swallow doesn't mix well with soda. My hypothesis is that the food scrapes off any protective coating from the wounds and then the acid from the soda causes ouchiness. Soda drank in the absence of food is not a problem and chewy or scratchy food without soda is not as big of a problem.

My follow-up with my doctor is Thursday afternoon. I have every reason to believe that each day from here on out will be slightly better than the preceding one until all is well.

At the hotel in Douglasville, my wife bedded down with one toddler while I wrestled the other to sleep. I asked her if I had snored and she told me that she didn't know because the room AC was too loud. This and the fact that she didn't mention my snoring while she was driving tells me that if I do still snore that it is significantly lessened from before. This combined with the facts that my O2 levels were fine at the hospital and that I haven't been waking up with headaches suggest that the procedures were very successful in correcting both my sleep apnea and snoring and that I will likely see even more improvements as any residual swelling resolves.

I am glad that your disregard for your post-op instructions has not caused any damage to your recent surgical sites.

Given that I didn't disregard any post-op instructions, I find your post to be rather unacceptable.

I had my two-week surgical follow up today. All is progressing nicely. My nose looks great. He is very proud of himself in that regard. My tonsils and palate are healing nicely and I can expect to continue to have improvements as it continues to heel over the next several weeks.
