ADRs + new reservation

We originally booked a package and got all of our ADRs, but yesterday a TPV room opened up so I called to switch us over. We used a travel agent, so the Disney Rep couldn't alter that reservation so I just had him make a new reservation for the room. My question is, when I cancel out the original package am I going to lose our ADRs? What is the best way to do this so that nothing crazy happens?

You will not lose your ADR's. ADR's have nothing to do with room reservations.

Just out of curiosity, did you consider asking your travel agent to rebook the room for you, or check with them before doing it? My concern is that by cancelling out the original reservation and rebooking it yourself, he or she will now receive no compensation for any work they did for you. Because of this, some travel agents will charge a cancellation fee, to cover their time invested, as nobody works for free. I would recommend contacting your TA asap to see what their policy is, and make sure you're in the clear! :)

Thanks for the tip - I tried calling my TA immediately and she did not answer. I had also sent her an email a few days before asking a different question that she did not respond to (and still has not...). In the interest of not losing the opportunity, I did what I had to do. I checked back on Monday morning and the discount was gone. If it was still there, I would have tried calling her again and had her alter her reservation. I was surprised to learn that the Disney agent couldn't just make changes to my existing reservation. Hopefully I am not penalized for this. Also my TA is dropping the ball because she also didn't notify me when the CLP dinner packages went live and I almost missed getting a dinner package and had to book that myself also. I'm pretty much a self booker and she didn't do much in terms of recommendations, etc as I had everything planned out. She also couldn't get me MVMCP tickets and I had to do that on my own. Out of curiosity, and I don't want to be deceitful to her, but if I cancel my package with her how would she even know I rebooked myself? Unless she cancels out my ADRs at the same time? I will give her another call today and see what she can do...she didnt offer us any sort of incentives on booking with her (I think some people get gift cards, etc). I feel badly, but I told her upfront I wanted a TPV and she said she would check and clearly she isn't.

This is why I don't use TA's. I don't know where people find these wonderful TA's who go above & beyond for them but I've always had to clean up messes created by TA's. I've also never gotten any special perks other than the occasional OBC on a cruise or two. Not worth not having any control over the reservation to me.

My sister and brother in law used her for their trip in July and had great things to say about her...she rebooked them when a discount came out and I think she gave them some free tickets to BB. She has not been so great for me. I'm pretty sure I asked extensively in our conversations about anything regarding cancelling the trip and she did not mention any penalties or else I would have just done it myself. In any case, I called a left her a message because she did not answer again.

Whew, so finally got in touch with my TA and she was great. She said you can actually transfer over reservations to a travel agent within 30 days of booking them, so I can still get her credit for the trip. But she also said that she would never have charged me if it wasn't able to work that way. She said she would want me to have the room I wanted and wouldn't take that away or charge us for it. Just wanted to put that out there so the TAs don't get a bad rep and so people know they can transfer the reservations to a TA if that happens!

Hey...I was reading another thread about finding hard to get ADRs and someone said this "- Start checking at 45 days because it's the deadline to cancel package and get refund. If trip is cancelled they will cancel ADRs due to CC guarantee."

Are they mistaken?

The they here refers to the guest cancelling not Disney cancelling. If the guest does not cancel there is a $10person no show fee

As the PP said, the "they" refers to the guest. Guests will cancel out their ADR's separately if they cancel a package reservation at 45 days prior because if they don't cancel the ADR's, they will be charged a $10 per person no show charge. So, yes, checking at 45 days is a good strategy. You can also use a snipe service like Disney Dining Buddy. For $8, they will watch for the reservation for you and send you an alert when something becomes available. They don't reserve it for you, but if you click through the second you get the text alert, you will most likely snag the reservation.

Sounds like you have a nice TA with her client's best interest at heart. It's nice of you to transfer the new reservation so she can retain her commission. :)
