If this was the case and we called a few days before, would this be a problem to modify, or would it have to be a whole new ADR for 2 that we may or may not get?

As long as someone shows up, you're not charged the penalty (if it's one that requires a guarantee) so I'd leave it as is and let them know when you check in that your party is smaller than anticipated.

It's Boma where I don't think they take a credit card. I just want to do proper etiquette and not make anyone mad at the restaurant. We are thinking we will drop the kids in the child area, but wanted to have the ADR for 5 until we realized we felt comfortable to do this. We will definitely modify early in the week to be courteous to others. I just didn't want to miss out on Boma altogether.

You can try, but absolutely make sure they don't try to cancel and rebook for you though! It is possible to modify (a dining CM has been here before and confirmed it), but not all CMs may know that they can, or even how to do it.

In the end, it's not really going to matter either way. They don't hold tables for normal ADRs (unsure about the large party ADRs they get from time-to-time, but up to 10 or 12 I'm sure they don't), they simply assign the table for the party size you show up with when you check in.

(Note: Boma does not require a CC-guarantee at this time.)

Thanks Cafeen! So you're saying like the other poster just to keep as is until we arrive at check in? That definitely makes me feel less anxious about the whole thing.

Or I can always try to modify it earlier on the week through My Disney Experience on my phone earlier in the week?

Absolutely. The less that the Dining CMs touch your reservations, the less chance the system has of flubbing them up. (Note: blame is placed on the system, not the CMs, since the CMs have to work with the crappy system that IT/Application Development created).

You wouldn't be able to do it yourself without cancel/rebook. Only CMs can do that, and not all of them can. It's probably better off (especially since it's Boma, not like it's BOG where a party of 1-2 may be trying for the potential table that might be opened up by you possibly doing 2 instead of 5... perhaps ;)) just to keep it as is. So, it's doable, but only unless you really really really feel you have to, I wouldn't bother with it.
