ADHD Meds and side effects?

My daughter has a friend who was started on ADHD medication this year. Sorry, I don't know the name of the medication.

I don't know if this can be a side effect from that, but she has started to get cold very easily. I have seen her lips turn blue on a couple of occasions. Today the kids were sitting cross-legged on the floor and her lower legs turned blue and blotchy...it looked really bad.

She always says she feels fine when I ask her.

Her parents are not open to suggestions about their kid, but I am worried about her. I tried to look up circulation problems on the interent...but you know how that is.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I will tell her parents what I saw but knowing them they won't act on it.

My friend's ex husband took ADHD medicine, and it made him stink to high heaven and sweat ALL the time. So those medicines can have WEIRD side effects. Even if it's not the drug, those symptoms don't sound very good, especially for a child.

If you find out the name of the drug, I like looking on drugs.com for info (rxlist is another, if I'm remembering correctly).

I just looked up Adderall and Ritalin side effects and neither listed the things that you mentioned.
There may be something else going on or perhaps the ADHD meds may be having an interaction with other meds that she is taking.

Does she have any breathing problems? Her lips turning blue is not normal.

I think you should mention what you have witnessed to her parents. They may have not noticed what is happening or think that they are isolated symptoms.

My DD was on Adderall for about a year for ADD. We were very hesitant to put her on it and had good reasons why, but after much debate and being basically pushed by the school we put her on it. She had wonderful results from the med, but she developed a heart murmur and very high blood pressure while on it. We took her to a cardiologist who said take her off it and do not even consider another. Within days the blood pressure returned to normal, she still has the heart murmur :guilty: but it has improved. She has been off the meds now for three years. I wish I would have stuck with my gut feeling from the start and never put my DD on it. The straight A's she got while on it were not worth the harm it was doing to her. Please consider mentioning what you saw happening to the childs parents. It very well could be a side effect of the med. Best of luck to you.:flower3:

Thanks guys.

She is not on any other meds. She is spending the night tonight and I am always afraid something will happen while she is here.

My DH will talk to her parents, they are closer.

Now this is just a thought please dont flame me.... my DS takes ADD meds and he has friends that take them as well.... Maybe you can call the school nurse on Monday and tell her your concerns.....she can check on her in school and in return will call her mom and talk to her about it...leaving your name and the friendship out of it.

My older 2 are both on meds for ADD/ADHD and do not have side effects such as this. My oldest had to have EKG done PRIOR to starting any ADHD meds and recently had updated EKG. Both times it was abnormal but with further testing they found nothing wrong with his heart so figure it is just the way he is. I would recommend that if your child may be starting an ADHD med or is on one that you consider requesting the EKG and further follow up if needed. Too many kids have undiagnosed heart conditions anymore that the med may cause to show up or possibly worse. One of my son's best friends passed away suddenly due to an undiagnosed heart condition and they is something that hits so hard. He was 15 years old.

My son was on ritalin & then adderall. Also for a while he took clonadine ( a blood thinner or blood pressure med, I forget) with it & had weird side affects. All kids are different but those symptoms are kinda scary. Hopefully they get her Dr. to check that out.
