I don't know how to search well, but there was a thread a while back about ADHD medications and peoples opinions and experiences. I posted several times on that thread about my kids experiences. At the time, our kids had just been switched to strattera, and I gave it a reasonably good review.

Well, since then, we've had a really negative experience. I wanted to share it with you since I had given a positive review in the past. I know many people think that there is too much personal info on this board, but neither my daughter or I are embarrased by what happened to her, since it was truly a medical interaction, and if posting this helps any other parent identify warning signs early, then our experience wasn't wasted.

Here goes. About 2 weeks or so ago, DD's teachers had told me that DD was being pretty disruptive in class, so I asked her family doctor about increasing her medicine. DD turned 12 on Saturday, and weighs about 80 pounds. She was on 25 mg of Strattera, once a day. The normal dose for her weight/age is 40 mg, but when we had her at that level this summer, she was sleeping a lot, so we dropped it down to the lower dose. Doctor said that the higher dose was fine (DD had gained 7 or 8 pounds since summer), and we started the higher dose Saturday.

Tuesday morning, DD wakes up perfectly normal, but starts throwing up. She's had a lot of stomach problems this school year (warning sign number 1). I kept her home. About mid-day she woke up from a nap and said that she was seeing monsters (warning number 2). She wasn't very rational about it, but would calm down as long as I was with her all the time. DD can be a drama queen, so I thought she might be exagerating or making it up. She ended up falling asleep about 4:30 and slept through the night. She was still throwing up the next morning, but seemed better. DH gave her the medicine because we thought she might be able to go to school in the afternoon. A couple hours later, the monsters were back, and she was inconsolable.

When I got home from work, I took her to the emergency room. In leaving the house, the hallucinations got much worse, and by the time we were in the hospital, they had to restrain and sedate her. They basically knocked her out, then ran a number of neurological tests to rule out physical problems and referred her out to Children's Hospital in DC.

The final result (after a CAT scan, a spinal tap, an EEG, and 4 days on a psych unit) was that there is a rare side effect of strattera that is pyschosis, and she got it. Once the medicine left her system, she's just fine.

I want to make others aware that this is a potential side effect for strattera. Her school counselor said that she had had several students who had stomach problems related to strattera, but no one with this problem. I would recommend that if your child has stomach problems while on strattera, please consider it a warning sign and talk to your doctor!!

Many people on this board have been praying for us (I had posted a note on my cruise meet board, where I post most often), and I deeply appreciate the concern. I hope that our experience will help others.

OMG you're poor dd!!!! How horrifying! Thanks so much for the heads up. Devyn is currently on Adderall and seems to be doing fine, but hopefully we wont need to switch the meds anytime soon.

Sending thoughts and prayers for your dd and you too.

What a horrible experience that must have been! My DD was on Strattera for about a year and we just switched because it wasn't working as well as it was at first.

I am sorry that your dd had to experience such an event with her medication.

I will share with you that my dd at 10 years old was changed from Ritalin to Adderall........... she got very odd, angry, bizzare and psychotic.. some scary stuff.. really scary. Hec, at one point I thought I was living with an exorcist clone like Linda Blaire.. I swear at any moment her head would turn 360 degrees!

after 10 days the doc took her off the adderall and put her back on the Ritalin. At 14, She is on max doses of Ritalin..she was dx'd at 3...

just wanted to know that you are not alone. Take care and big hugs!
Joan

Lisa,
Thanks for the post, I think it is really important to hear all sides of the medications. I realize that this is a rare side effect but I do think parents need to be aware.

I will tell you my own thoughts. Honestly, I don't know why Ritalin (methylphenadate) gets such a bad rap. It does have side effects and my children certainly have experienced them, but I have found them to be fairly mild. I myself have taken some of the SSRIs and Buspar and Wellbutrin which are the same class of drugs as Strattera. I have had some severe, horrible side effects with each one of them yet these drugs are deemed safe and are not controlled. I can certainly see how any of them could easily cause a "psychosis." I swear I've had some of them make me see things that weren't really there. When the recent reports came out that parents of ADHD children were most probably ADHD themselves, I decided (with my doctor's supervision) to try Ritalin. Now, I am VERY sensitive to most medications; however, I found the Ritalin to be quite benign, even at higher doses. It was much more tolerable than the SSRI type drugs. It did nothing for the symptoms that I have that I *thought* might be ADHD--obviously I don't have it. But taking the drug was a good experience for me and made me feel better about medicating my kids with it. It isn't as bad as I thought.

Lisa, how frightening for you and your DD! I'm glad that she is fine now.

My friend just started her son on Strattera. Her son has been on other meds, but had side effects from them. I hope it doesn't make things worse for him.

I appreciate you sharing your experience with all of us. Knowledge is power. ::yes::

Take care! :sunny:

Thanks for sharing your dd's story. Strattera certainly isn't the dream drug it was made out to be.

My ds 8 had problems with Straterra too. We tried it with him two different times to be sure it was the cause, but it made him really moody and emotional. He got very sullen, grumpy, and sad. We have him on adderall right now and the only side effect we are seeing is decreased appetite.

Hi Lisa, I found the thread. I am so sorry for what DD went through. Thank you for sharing this with us. I am really praying that our DD age 7 will not have to be medicated and the behavioral modification and psychologist will be enough. Time will tell. It is so scary what can happen to the children on these drugs.
Take care, Gail

I am glad I kept my son on the 24 hour Adderall instead of switching to something else. No need to fix what isn't broken.

Sorry about what happened to your daughter. That had to be really scarey. :(

Glad you discovered the problem. to your daughter & your family. As I was flipping channels today Ricki Lake (whom I never watch) was talking to parents and discussing medicating vs not medicating ADHD kids. Everyone felt strongly that they were doing what was best for their child. One family had the most heartbreaking story. Their 10 yr old daughter was fine in the morning but "fell" at school. They picked her up & took her to the dr. even though the girl insisted she felt fine and just want to go home & play Nintendo. While in the waiting room at the doctor's office, the girl had a siezure & died. It was so sad. The parents were guilt ridden because they consented to the meds. The doc that perscribed them had spent a grand total of 45 minutes with that child prior to writing that perscription. Can't recall what she was on. I was in tears - I could so relate. We have had trusted doctors & teachers take totally opposite opinions on the need to medicate our one son. So far we have resisted medication. But there are days that are beyond challanging for all of us - especially our son. Other days, he is an absolute joy.

Mom2boys. How heartbreaking that story was. Our DD is 7 and is not on drugs as well. Some days are so tuff and other days she is such a doll. I hope and pray to keep her off drugs. Children can either adjust well on drugs or not. Our DD has other medical problems. She has Asthma, Allgeries to food and outside environment. DD also is allergic to Pennicillin. DD also has an Etopic Kidney. In my heart I do not feel she is a good candidate for drugs. These stories are so heatbreaking and scarey. Our DD is an angel at school. She releases it all at home, which is a good thing at this point in time. It just breaks my heart to hear these stories. Gail
