I thought I saw someone post that they had heard of this...so I went on the website and checked it out.

If you have the Disney Chase CC(which many of us do) as one of the benefits is additional car accident insurance for rental cars. I also called to verify it with Chase, and they said yes, I would be covered if I were in an accident or someone hit the car, provided I put the rental car charges on my Disney Visa. They are also sending me additional information on this, so I will post that when it arrives.

For me I am so relieved, I am renting a car for a week, and while I was bringing my insurance from home, I just love having the additional coverage(as a piece of mind).

Does anyone have experience using this insurance?
Thanks Terri

It is secondary insurance. If your auto policy has collision coverage, that would pay first, then Visa would pay the deductible. There is a time limit to report the claim to Visa, it will probably say when you get the info. Someone recently posted a case where they were getting hit with a rental car claim a year later (damage while the car was valeted). So if there's a problem, report the claim even if the other party says they will take care of it.

Check with your insurance agent. In most cases your own automobile insurance will cover you when you rent a car. So, the secondary coverage is redundant and will never kick in.

The secondary coverage with the credit card DOES kick-in. Most people have $250, $500 or $1000 collision deductibles. If you charge your entire car rental to your Gold or Platinum Visa or MasterCard (and I believe AMEX) and waive the CDW, the secondary coverage pays that deductible for you. This benefit is not insurance, it's a credit card benefit.

BTW, this credit card benefit is secondary only in the United States, U.S. territories and Canada. You use your personal insurance first. The credit card benefit is primary elsewhere since your personal auto policy doesn't cover you. This can save you a ton of money when you rent elsewhere, like Europe.

It's important not to assume you have this benefit. If you have a gold or platinum card, check with your credit card company for the latest rules. Certain types of cars are excluded (i.e. exotic cars, luxuary cars), there is a maximum rental length depending on your credit card and it may be excluded in some rental countries.

Many of the rental companies have changed their contracts so that if a valet damages the car, you are liable for the damages. I used to use the extra insurance through American Express because their coverage was not secondary. Then I found out that they do not cover damage from a valet.

Now my State Farm agent tells me that they will cover anyone that I have authorized to drive "my" car (and my policy does cover rental cars). Why do I think that since the valet people are not authorized users on the rental contract that State Farm may have an out? Maybe I am just being cynical.

Doesn't stop me from using valet services but it is something to be aware of. I would call Chase and ask if valet services are covered.

This may be a moot point if you don't use valet.

I'm sure Disney has garagekeepers insurance, so they should pay if they damage your car. The problem comes in if someone else hits your car while they are parking it. Then you would have to go after them.
