Adding People to Room and Dining Plan

Hello,

We rented DVC points from Dave and had a couple of questions around the dining plan. We are in a 2 bedroom at BWV. Initially, I had added my family of five as named people on the reservation - me, my wife and 3 kids. We now know that my in laws are coming - father in law and mother in law.

My family of 5 are the only ones that are going to want the dining plan. My question is can I add the dining plan to our reservation and then add my in laws as named people on the reservation? Or do I need to add the dining plan now, and then add my in laws at check in? The point being that only 5 of us on the reservation want the dining plan. I know with a regular room, if you have everyone on the reservation initially, they would all have to purchase the dining plan.

Same rules for DVC and the member has to add the plan and names to the reservation. You may be able to add the non eaters at check in and not pay for them but no guarantees plus you are a guest of the owner and you shouldn't be able to add names. Much will depend on the CM.

IMHO, do not try and add the in-laws at check-in.
Everyone in the room MUST be on the DP if anyone in the room is on the DP. They must be on the room reservation and the DP paid for in full 48 hours before you arrive.
I know of a case where the DP was canceled for everyone in the room when someone was added to the reservation at check-in because that person was not listed and paid for the DP 48 hours before arrival.
If they are on the reservation, they need to be included in paying for the DP.

Other considerations:

Anyone not listed on the reservation, will not be eligible to make 60 day FP+ reservations or ride Magical Express or take advantage of EMH.

You may also have issues with David's. I am not familiar with that site's rules regarding reservation changes after the initial reservation is made.

My advice is to skip the dining plan if your in-laws are going to stay with you in the 2 bedroom. It will entail the least risk and least hassle.

Thank you for all the replies. We are not concerned at all about FP+, EMH or Magical Express. We will be there for 9 days and the in laws will visit parks maybe twice in that time.

Is DVC different in this way from regular reservations? Last year we rented a throw away room under my wife's name and added the dining plan for her. When we checked in, we added the in laws to the room. We understood at the time that we could have been charged $10 per night, but they never ended up charging us. They were not required to have the dining plan and my wife was able to keep hers. They had all the "rights" of regular guests at that time.

So is it different for DVC or is the rub because I rented the points? In other words, if I was the owner of the DVC, would I be able to do this?

Your issue is that you are renting DVC points. It is not your reservation to make changes to. The rules of a hotel-side reservation you make for cash and a points booking on someone else's points are different.

Yes. You don't "own" the points or the reservation and have no right to make changes to it.

If you want the flexibility of a cash reservation, you need to reserve on cash.

To get the DP you'll need to get it for everyone including the in laws.

The rules are that if one person in the room has the dining plan, all people in the room must have the dining plan. In addition, since you are renting a reservation the owner of the reservation must make all changes. You are trying to game the system (break the rules), by falling on the mercy of a Disney employee and according to Dis rules we cannot help you in that endeavor.

According to the the rules, you should not be allowed to add anyone at check in.

Nope, even if you were the owner, all people in the room must have the dining plan for the complete duration of the reservation and it must be added 48 hours in advance.

Yes a stay on points is different than a hotel stay.

A few years ago we could do what you're saying. Now we can't (even those of us not renting) while the hotel-stay people can.

If you try to add them at check in, the front desk will try to cancel the reservation and rebook it. It will be messed up. We tried to add my son to our reservation at OKW earlier this fall to give him access to our villa and be able to charge to our room. He lives in Windermere so he didn't need to stay with us. We didn't add him to the reservation. Since you don't own the points, you do not want to mess with them.

Have the owner add them now, pay for them to have the dining plan. Or book them a separate room. Or skip the dining plan.
