Adding on...a few questions

Just back from a wonderful trip and itching to add on! We own at BCV and bought through resale. We are SO happy with our decision to purchase...only wish we had a bought a few more points :-). Hubby would like to add on at BCV while I would like to add-on somewhere else (VGF) to have the 11 month advantage. I have a few questions about adding on.

I have read about having 2 different UYs at the same resort. What are some of the problems with 2 different UYs at 2 different resorts?

I was initially put-off by the high price of VGF but upon further analysis I am considering it. Given BCV is selling fairly high now and expires in 2042 the discrepancy is smaller than I originally assumed. My assumption based on some research and reading a lot is that if we want to stay at VGF we really need to own there. This is correct, right? One of the DVC guides told us that it will probably be easier to get into VGF in a few years after Poly has sold more. Not sure if I believe this though.

Thanks so much!

Same issues as different UY at the same resort. If you want to book at 7m, it's difficult to combine points. If you plan to only use them separately, not an issue. Just have to remember each UY's banking and expiration dates.

I suggest that you use your existing points to stay at the different resorts then decide what is your favorite.

Buying during the honeymoon phase can lead to problems and disappointment.

Thanks for the reply, Bill. We have stayed at BCV (our home resort) every year since becoming members (and love it there) then typically pay out of pocket for a few "extra" nights at a different resort for a little added fun and excitement.

To me, it almost seems easier to have different UY at different resorts than if the extra points were at the same resort. Here's my reasoning (am I missing something?)...

Our goal is to be able to stay a few more nights than we can with our current points. Adding on at BCV with a different UY would mean separate reservations either at BC or somewhere else if we can get in at 7 months. If we add on at VGF with a different UY we would use the points at GF and the reservation would be separate anyway because it is a different resort. Am I making any sense?

I have read in several places that it is "difficult" to combine points. Is it possible? What is the process? Also wondering about the once a year point transfer. Does that mean that at the 7 month mark you can transfer points from one contract to another? Do they have to be the same resort?

Case 1 : 7n at BCV, add 2n. 1UY = 1 reservation with 2bcv contracts, 1 reservation if adding last 2n at 7m with VGF contract. 2UY = 2 reservations w 2 bcv contracts, 2 reservations adding last 2n at 7m with VGF contract.

Linking the reservation is not difficult. It's mixed whether you have to check out/in. I had to in Feb when I booked the same room with 2 different UY. Both reservations have to be identical to link. Otherwise you risk having to move.

Transfer = I don't bother because you can't book online with transfer points in this case. I typically make several changes to my reservation before it's finalized. "Hidden points" get in the way.

Another thing to think about is when you have say 3pt left in one UY and 7pt in the other. Are you ok with borrowing to make a reservation? I wouldn't use my 1x transfer for 3pts!

Why a different UY?

Thanks so much for the explanation. Still in the early research stage about what resales are out there and going pricing. Trying to figure out how important finding a Dec contract is, so this is very helpful!

Just trying to figure out how important it is for us to wait for a contract with our current UY. Seems if we decide to add more points at BC we will wait for the right Dec contract but if we decide to go with VGF than it doesn't seem as important.

Are you buying VGF via resale or direct? If buying direct, you can tell Disney what UY you want.
