Adding Disney Gift Cards to Onboard Account

Yes, this is great - I was dreading carrying around a $1000 gc (which I also got from Target with a discount).
Gotta love that RedCard discount! That's how we budgeted for dining at WDW back in September. I hate that there isn't a way to load them into MDE or at least link them with your hotel room at WDW. Had to stop at the front desk every day or two and pay things off with a GC. Not a big deal, but linking would be more efficient.

I have physical cards. I’ll just do it onboard. No big deal.
You can add those. You just select Disney gift card as payment option and type in the numbers on the back of the card. I would recommend consolidating them all onto one card first though so you only have to go through the process once.

And even if you insist on going to Guest Services to do it in person, the CM and the people behind you will greatly appreciate it if you have the funds in as few cards as possible.

If you go to the DCL website, there is "Onboard gifts" section under the "Already booked" tab.

If you sort by Category, there is an option for "Onboard Credit" and "Onboard Spa Credit."

You can purchase a credit with the gift card(s) you are using.

This would be if you want to have the credit on there ready to go before you get on board.
Thank-you soo much for this info. It was soo simple for me to add our gift cards and good to know I can also add using my redemption card a little closer to the trip.

I guess my only concern is what if I add these gift cards as OBC but something happens and I don’t get onboard? ( Don’t want to use the “C” word…..)

Wondering the same, if using gift cards for on board credit and the trip falls through is the money returned as gift card or on my credit card?

The amount goes back to the card it came from so be sure to hold onto it in a safe place until it is full spent.

Yes they go back to the original gift card.

That is why I prefer getting my gift cards from Target and printing them at home. I am able to write on the paper when I applied them and to what trip. The numbers are large and easy to read. Plus I can keep them easily in a file folder. The plastic cards don't even sharpie well and end up in a baggie which is easy to misplace and mix up.

Any leftover money on the paper gift card is easily transfered to a plastic card on the Disney Gift Card website.

Not sure this has already been said, so:
Think of your spending capacity in three "layers":
1) onboard credit from DCL or T.A. - has to be used on the cruise, or it goes away;
2) GCards of various (magnetic) stripes - use 2nd, and might/could get refunded back to the original GC media (in other words, save the #'s or plastic) if not fully used up.
3) CCard, Cash, etc., i.e., "your money" - should get used LAST, even if you present amounts or Card# to Guest Services at beg. of trip

In our experience, G.Svc's has been helpful stratifying these for us.
