Adding dining plan at check in?

Thanks for replying, PinkTink! I seem to remember the "changes OK within 45 days as long as you are adding and not subtracting" thing from previous bookings. If you think of it, can you please post again after you talk to reservations to confirm? Thanks! :)

You can do whatever you want within 45 days they just may charge a change fee. Anything except for adding the dine plan within 72 hours

Here's what I found on the subject as it applies to DVC members. I'll see if I can find something that verifies whether or not this policy is the same for all guests:

Disney Dining Plan
Take advantage of Disney Dining Plan options for an easy and affordable way to enjoy meals and snacks at over 100 select restaurants throughout Walt Disney World® Resort. Choose from a variety of dining experiences for the length of your stay at one of the six Disney Vacation Club Resorts located at Walt Disney World Resort or at the Walt Disney World Resort hotels available through The Disney Collection. Simply add a Disney Dining Plan selection to your reservation at least 48 hours prior to your arrival date.

hmmm... I was told by the CM who booked my trip that I could add the DP the day I arrived if I wanted to. He said any changes made to a resort reservation within the 45 day mark would not be a problem (or cost an extra fee), as long as we were increasing the price of the trip and not decreasing:rotfl:

I was planning on adding DP when I arrived, now I guess i better call and confirm:confused3

Sorry, that cm gave you bad information.

You cannot add the dining plan to a room only reservation. You would have to cancel that reservation and rebook a room/tickets/dining package. When you do that, you will most likely lose your bounceback discount, unless it can be reapplied to a package.

AP members also have to buy a package, but it is a room/dining package, no tickets. AP discounts may be applied to the package.

Dining packages are subject to the same deposit, change and cancellation rules as other WDW packages.

Only DVC members can buy the dining plan without booking a package.

Even if you have already booked a package, you can't add the dining plan at checkin. It must already be on your reservation.

Hope this doesn't add to the confusion...we were just on the phone with a CM regarding this. What TDC Nala said was exactly what we were told...AND not only do you have to cancel that reservation & rebook a room/ticket/dining package...the refund for the initial reservation can take up to two billing cycles...which we were just told is two months! yikes!
Here is what would happen to us.
1. Cancel our current free dining package today....could wait up to 2 months for a refund (we have a significant amount already paid towards this)
2. Rebook for room only reservation...need to pay the deposit.
3. When we call to add dining+tickets...again, cancel our room only...wait for possibly another 2 months for that refund.
4. Then pay for the new room only/dining/tickets package.

I think we will be sticking with our current package because to me , all the transactions that need to take place, leave way to much room for error.:guilty:

and here's what I was told.

In effect, I can add the dining plan to my current room only reservation, keeping my discounted room rate. I will also need to purchase at least a one day bas ticket for H and myself (which I kind of figured). The procedure for doing this is that yes, they will cancel my current room only ressie, and rebook it as the package, still applying the same bounceback discount code. My reservation number will remain the same.

So, that's the "official" answer - hope it helps someone else!

Just to keep the terminology from being more confusing for readers, you didn't technically add the dining plan to a room only reservation. What they did was "convert" the reservation to a package and apply the discount to the package, thus the requirement that you add tickets. You now have a package reservation with the discount applied to the package.

You were told wrong if they told you your res number will be the same. You cant cancel a res and keep the same res number. It will be a new 8 digit number vs. the room only 12 digit number.
