Hi,

I am new here and this is our first trip to Disney with 2 little ones. Right now we have 2 base ticket's for our visit but we do have an extra day and depending on now the kids are doing, may want to add another. Is it possible to do it while there? Or do we have to pay for completely new tickets?
Thank you!

Yes, you can add a day to a normal Disney ticket at any time before all used day's end.
(Ie you can upgrade during park day 1 or 2)
You may not be able to upgrade some convention, group or timeshare tickets.

It doesn't hurt, and may benefit you to use the ticket first (sounds like your plan)

Any park or DTD guest relations can upgrade the ticket (there are guest relations outside and inside the parks). The cost for the upgrade should be the difference between the posted 2 and 3 day price +tax

Wonderful! That is perfect for what we need. Of course we cannot avail of the Fastpasses but I do not know how the kids will be and if 2 days will tire them out totally.
