Ok I am lazy and didn't want to do a search. We are new owners and my MIL may want her own points. Could she buy say 100pts at our home resort AKV and we add her somehow to the membership?? Or would she say buy 100 points that she would "transfer" into our just add to our membership and she use them when she wanted and how she wanted with us making the reservation because we are the actual members?? We live in different households. I know there are members that "share" their points with family.

Thanks so much in advance for answering my question

I beleive your MIL can buy her 100 points directly from DVC because she wants to buy at AKV. The 160 point minimum for a new member only applies to the other resorts (excluding SSR).

You can then share your points with her by either using your 1 time per year transfer to move all the points into a single account or by each booking a few of the nights of the vacaiton and then lining the reservations together. She can name you as an "associate" member, so you can even do the work of making the reseration for her.

This option will probably be much easier than trying to add her to your existing membership. Adding her would require, at a minimum, that you deed your interest over from the 2 of you to the 3 of you after getting DVC's rubber stamp waiver of ROFR for a related party transfer and then paying the costs associated with preparing and recording the new deed.

Best of luck -- Suzanne

Your deed is in your name (and spouse). Your MIL cannot just become part of your contract. She could be made an "associate" member meaning she would be entitled to make reservations but would not be entitled to any DVC perks such as AP disocunt.

She cannot buy 100 points from Disney unless they are still doing the 100 point deal for new purchasers at AKV rather than the 160 point minimum required of new purchasers. If she does a new member purchase, her contract cannot be made part of your contract.

You can only add-on at less than 160 points to your contract by doing so in the name of the persons on your deed, meaning you cannot add a third person as part of an add-on. You could add her to your ownership, but that requires an actual real estate transfer where you and your spouse transfer ownership of your current interest to the three of you under a new deed. Of course, she would then be considered one of the full owners of all your points (who could force a sale if she decided to).

If she buys a separate contract, you could combine them for a single trip in same room via a transfer. What I am not sure of is whether you can do a linked reservation in your particular situation, where she reserves some nights, you reserve others in same category of room, and then ask MS to link the two reservations so that you won't have to change rooms.

Reservations from two different contracts can not be linked. AKV requires a 160 point minimum for new buyers.

Why not have her buy resale, same UY and transfer for your joint vacations. Keeping the memberships may be a good thing.

I've linked reservations with a friend a couple of times. The end result was one continuous reservation.

Typical, we tried to link two studios on points last March and we were told that they had to be from the same contract, same names. :sad2:

:) Thanks so much for answering my question. It was the real estate change mumbo jumbo that I wasn't sure about. I didn't think about her buying resale and transferring points....hmmmm. Thanks again!:thumbsup2

Reservations can be linked if they match up (right dates, same unit size AND type, etc). The two owners don't even have to know each other as is sometimes the case with rentals.

There are several ways to approach it. IF Disney is allowing the 100 point buy it, that might be the best way. Other options and approaches would include
  • OP changes current deeds then adds on the home resort and points needed. Downside is every one is on all the deeds (with financial and other risks) but they act as one master contract with no transferring needed.
  • The OP adds on THEN changes the names on the deed for the add on. The add on becomes a totally seperate master contract and you have to tranfer points or make separate reservations and link them to use for a single stay using points from both groups.
  • They MAY (or may not) allow you to add on the minimum purchase in increments less than the new purchase requirements and change the deed, they have a couple of times. For example, say you added on 160 points but as a 100 pt contract and a 60 pt contract in the new names. The two advantages over a new purchase is that you MIGHT be able to break it down into smaller sizes and that you would avoid the closing costs.
  • Buy a resale contract of the same or different UY in the desired names and transfer points or link reservations as needed.
  • Just do the add on, add the other person as an associate and let them use the points. They won't get member benefits in many cases unless with the actual member.
You can change the name on the deeds yourself for under $50 for a single contract. There are a couple of other variations to the theme's I've posted above but it should get you thinking.
