Adding a park hopper to a one-day ticket?

Hi DisBoards!
I'm going to spend one day at DCA this fall. It looks like it's one of the days with park hours from only 10-8, so probably not enough time to justify a park hopper ticket, but...

It is also projected to be a very low crowd day, so perhaps we won't face awful lines (fingers crossed). So, can we buy a 1-day base ticket and add on the additional cost of the hopper midday if we decide we do have enough time to spend a few hours in Disneyland?

It's my understanding you can always add to a ticket until it's used up, and receive credit for any money already paid.
