Adding a guest after checkin...

I posted this over in the DVC section yesterday, but haven’t gotten any insight, so thought to post here too.

The kids & I are at BWV Aug 1-7 with the DDP. DH has at the last minute decided to fly in over the long weekend to spend their birthday with my boys (Aug 2-5).

Can I add him at checkin to our reservation and call and get him a ride via ME without also purchasing the DDP for him?

If not, anyone with Uber/Lyft from the airport experience? TIA!

Yes, you can add him when you check in. No worries with the dining plan, that can't be added at that point.

when you add him, set him up for DME for his arrival and departure.

I ended up just canceling the DDP for the four of us. Not worth the hassle. Sad that you can’t spontaneously decide to surprise your kids without jumping through hoops.

And apparently this subject is taboo on the Dis, so mods go ahead & close this thread too.

Bummer. Can't think of any way this is a hassle after doing this exact thing 6-7 times.

Not sure what hoops you're talking about.

This subject is most definitely not taboo on the DIS. I'm curious what makes you think that it is?

My thread on the DVC board got closed by a mod for trying to circumvent Disney rules apparently... The Members Services CM I talked to said that I could not add my husband at the front desk so that he could fly in the next day and access ME and EMH.

Wow. 2 seconds ago this thread was locked. I give up on getting info off of the Dis anymore. My thread on the DVC board was closed for trying to circumvent Disney rules apparently. A CM via DVC member services told me this wasn’t possible.

That CM gave you incorrect information.

The mod made a mistake over on the DVC forum. In your case it will work exactly as you planed and as you described in your post at the top of this thread. The only tricky (just timing) part is that you can't officially schedule your DH's DME until he is added to your reservation once you are at the BWV.
The issue of him not having the dining plan is also the default as any of the dining plans must be added a minimum of 3 days before arrival.

Example:

In order purchase the Dining Plan, all guests (ages 3 and up) staying in the same room must buy the same version of the Plan. Additionally, all guests must be on the plan for their entire length of stay. You can not, for example, only buy the plan for five nights of a seven night stay.

Your DH can even schedule his DME on the fly by completing the electronic form while standing at the Orlando airport in front of the DME desk. This is just a restriction with the agreement that Disney has with the airport authority. They need guests to have an "advanced" registration.

Quite possibly, but he was going to try and break my reservation into 3 different stays, that’s what I mean by hoops. And the answer I get here is a locked thread for circumventing rules. I figured maybe it’s a DVC vs cash thing.

That’s how I understood it, but then I started looking up old threads - 2015-17 -to find an answer and all related to DVC warn you can’t do this if you have the DDP.

So, I’m concerned not only about ME, but EMH which we’ll be hitting every morning. If his name can’t be added to our reservation, then no EMH.

I believe that you are correct about there being a difference between DVC and cash stays when it comes to the dining plans. Adding a person at check in could result in the cancellation of the dining plan for everyone else when you’re staying DVC on points. I recall reading the same threads. There must be something about DVC and dining plans that just doesn’t work smoothly. For instance, unlike guests staying on cash, guests staying on DVC points cannot see their dining credits on the app.

Yes, some of the threads mentioned having to rebook the room. I don’t want to skirt the rules, but it’s hard to know what the rules are when you can’t talk about it.

If you add your husband at check in, he will be considered a "day guest" and his magic band will be used to open the door, but not good for charging. We just did this two weeks ago when we added two of our son's friends to our two night reservation. We had a one bedroom that slept five and we were officially three, so adding the two of them was easy. The three of them were in Orlando for a professional meeting (they were getting awards) and had booked one night in the hotel at Universal (where the meeting was held) for Thursday night. We arrived on Friday for two nights. When they arrived at the resort, we took them over to the front desk. They gave the CM their names and she added them to the room. They even got magic bands in the color of their choice. They all had cars (so we had three parked at the villa) so they did not need DME.

Thx. So I am assuming DVC guests cannot be added the same way cash guests can upon checkin. They would simply be able to access the hotel amenities, but not the services DVC has to negotiate with other divisions - ME, EMH, etc?

That was my understanding as well. All they got was access to the villa. No charging to the room. If they couldn't charge to the room, they wouldn't have any dining credits on their bands either. But if they are on the reservation, they should be able to get DME and EMH. They show up as being on the reservation.
