Add a day to reservation

I have a reservation, and I want to stay an extra day (saves a ton on airfare). The resort I am in has availability the next day.

Do I:
1. Cancel and rebook? Isn't there a risk that I might not be able to get it and lose my entire trip?
2. Add another reservation as a 1 day and hope they can keep me in the same room?
3. If I call, would it be better? It's honestly difficult for me to call them right now cause I am in back to back conference calls.
4. Is there any other way to modify a reservation without losing it?

Add another reservation online for the same unit type, the single day. Then call/chat MS and get them merged. No rush on that second bit.
