Aren't lots of acorns supposed to be a sign of a cold winter?
Only have one oak tree at home, but there are tons at work. Last fall, several times I almost broke my ankle on the stupid things. Plus, they usually konk me in the head a few times heading from or towards the car.
At home, I have to deal w/ the @#*&(% sweet gum balls!

That is what we always go by, the excess for the critters to stock up on for the bad winter. Came true too! I have not seen as many as that year, but more then usual this year.
We had one squirels that got into our corn 2 weeks ago, I notices so many more that were on the stalks are down to cores
That being said, my cat Tigger has a pet squirel that visits every morning. I first saw him several years ago an ice storm, blizzard he sat on the windowsill in the kitchen with little clawed hands up begging to come in; ice hanging off his fur.
Yea, with 5 cats, no way. I did put a box with a towel in it.
He would come every morning when dd was getting ready for school and the Tigger would be ready to go out and play

This little friend still shows up daily at the deck door and Tigger will wake me up to go out.
On the other hand when the heat of the day was too much this summer he would not stay out long, (we are on 2 acres of forested area) but with the cooler weather this week, soon after The bid hunter Tigger came in with not a mouse, but a baby chipmunk.
Usually he will not kill the chippers, but bring them back like a playmate for the cats. It must have been a mistake this one was 10-7 (out of service).
But you know you have to praise them because cats are being providers and love to bring home the supper....
I would wait on the Acorns. Maybe like last Oct we will have snow covering them,
