We leave for Disney on the 12th. My wife has been suffering with pain in her foot primarily caused by Spur protrudiing into her Achilles tendon. Doctor refused to give her a cortizone shot as he says it is to risky. His only advice was for her to bring her walking boot if she felt any pain. My concerns for my wife is that her pain will get unbearable and her vacation ruined due to the pain. We have agreed that if she was in alot of pain we would take frequent rest breaks and even rent a electic cart for her. She may also be suffering from Plantar issue as well.

Can anyone suggest comfortable shoes that will not rub the back of her heel and that give support for her arch. I would be more at ease if she would just commit to wearing the walking boot full time as I know it gives her the best chance to enjoy herself but does limit her movement.

Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.

If I were you guys I'd plan on renting a scooter from a company that will bring it to your room. At least have an outside company researched and that info at the ready in case you get down there and she needs a scooter after all. It's been awhile since we rented one for my Mom but it was cheaper to rent from an outside company for a week than it was to get Mom a Disney park scooter for a day or 2. Sorry about her heel I know that must be really painful!

I'm not to sure what kind of shoes would be best for her, but could you go to a mall and walk around for a while in the shoes she plans on bringing to see how they feel after a while. Also I would plan on renting either a wheel chair or ECV. If you get and EVC rent from a company as the above poster said. THey will bring it your resort and pick it back up so you will not have to worry about getting one inside the park and you will not have to deal with the park running out of them. Also if she needs a longer break, she can go into the first aid stations and they will give her ( and you) a place to rest and she can take she shoes off and prop her feet up if that helps.

We should start a club...

I arrive on the 13th, myself sporting a "walking boot" for a partially torn Achilles tendon.

I have two plans, based on some of the advice that I have gotten:

- Don't risk it in the parks, and wear the big ol' walking boot.
- Crocs for around the resort.

If your wife's pain is anything like mine, make sure you request a 1st floor room!

Cheers,

Craig

Craig, my wife achilles is no where close to being torn or even a partial tear. She has a bone spur growing into her achilles. Currently she is just living with the pain as she goes on with her daily routine. The Doctor has many times warned her about any sustained excercise routines such as treadmill, stationary biking and so forth. So as you know we are pretty concerned about prolonged walking on the asphalt at Disney. I really feel the walking boot will be her saving grace for our trip. I appreciate your first post to the DIS.

Everyone, thank you for your comments and we will have the phone numbers handy for the local ECV companies just in case.

I don't have any, but I have seen shoes that look like tennies from the top but they don't have the heel part in back. You slide into them. That way, she has the arch support of a tennis shoe, without the rubbing of the heel. Check your local Foot Locker.

I have plantar fasciitis in both feet -- not the same, I know, but I swear by my walking boots. I have to wear both at the same time, which gives me balance issues, but really it is worth it. I worried about fitting into the rides -- I'm 5'9" with rather long legs, and the lack of an ankle joint in the boots worried me -- but I had no problems whatsoever. Some of the transfers to the rides that sit lower than the platforms might be a little awkward, but the CMs are always ready to help, and I never actually needed them at all.

Wear the boot! Your foot will thank you!

I do not have the same condition your wife does but have had bone spurs for many years. The doctors rarely do surgery as bone spurs just grow back and the recovery is DREADFUL since u have to put weight on your feet. I only wear backless shoes. This is permanent. Knowing crocs aren't beautiful they r the most comfortable shoes to wear. I think of the large italian :cutie: chef who wears them all the tme. At Disney crocs would look just great.
