Acer Aspire One 10.1" Netbook PC with Intel Processor and Windows XP Home
160 gb hard drive, 1gb RAM, Up to 4 hours battery life.

* I read on another board that Target will be offering the same thing in next week's circular for $179. I'm not sure how reliable that info is though.*

But is it decent? I am not sure what the difference is between a netbook and a laptop? We would use it mainly to check email. Could the kids play a game on it? Type a document in word for school?

Woohoo!!!!!! :cool1:

I just ordered the aquamarine one for DD11. She had a netbook on her christmas list and I was going to wait until black Friday to pick up Walmart's laptop, but this one is more what she wanted.... :santa:

Do you think if I order a 2nd aqua one that later, in an unopened box, that I could exchange it for a different color? I wish I had been more on the ball this morning and gotten the second one, but the other colors sold out befoe I could get it in my cart!

For me personally, a netbook is a wasted purchase. It makes sense for some people but there are many who think that the shortcomings of a netbook can be overcome with 'accessories', and after buying all the 'accessories' you'd be better off just getting a laptop.

Most (if not all) netbooks don't come with a CD-DVD drive. Whatever software is pre-loaded is what you get, and you need to either download additional software or connect to an external CD-DVD drive.

That means you cannot put a DVD in and watch a movie unless you have an external drive. That's a drawback if folks want their kids to be able to watch DVDs in the car while traveling.

Some say with the hard drive you can store tons of photos. True - those loaded via a smart card or jump drive via the USB. But if you want to edit those photos? You need the software. If its not pre-loaded, once again you need the external drive to get the job done.

Because netbooks are not designed for regular computing needs, the memory isn't normally as large as you would find on other regular laptops.

For me, the standard minimum laptop memory I would want (to be able to have multiple programs open for multi-tasking) is 2GB. Netbooks don't normally have that much. That's why they'll tell you that they aren't that good for lots of game-playing. Today's games require better memory.

Would this netbook be decent to check e-mails and web surfing?
i didn't know that netbooks don't have a CD-DVD drive. Watching movies is a nice feature we use on our laptop.

My finace bought me this netbook about a month ago and I LOVE it. I use it basically to surf and check emails. I also use it for my cub scout stuff (I'm a den leader). It works great for what I need. We haven't regretted the decision to buy one bit.

I bought this for DH when they were on sale in July for $199 for his Christmas present. We have a Mac Desktop so this netbook is strictly for mobile purposes and using the internet.

I use my desktop for all photo editing and movie editing, as well as use some other programs that we purchased.

This netbook should not be considered a fully functional laptop that is more inexpensive. There are big differences with the drives and memory, but if you just want a second computer to do minor things without breaking the bank, this would be perfect.

My DD15 wants a netbook for typing papers and using the web. She likes to go on YouTube and watch videos of people playing various songs on the guitar (that's how she learns to play them). Would a netbook be ok for this? I guess the connection speed of our DSL would be what matters? Or, is there something else that helps the internet speed along that would be compromised in a netbook? TIA

I would guess the Target deal is probably good. I bought the same machine w/free sleeve (like they are supposedly offering on Sunday) on the Sunday before Thanksgiving last year at Target, only it was $199 last year.

We have two Acer netbooks at our house, we have never had any problem with them. My daughters is practically attached to her, she uses it so much.

That would work out pretty well.

I have a netbook (Asus) that I use for school. It has windows, open office, and firefox on it. That's all as that is all I need... though the boyfriend wants to put a SNES emulator on it LoL.

Since I have a big powerful desktop, I had no need for anything BUT the netbook.
