We were at the playground this morning and someone told me that there was an roller coaster accident at Kings Island Ohio. There is information about it on www.themeparkinsider.com. It was the Son of the Beast ride.

I've heard a lot about it on the radio but not the latest details. thanks for sharing. I wonder what they'll do now? Guess I'll just go to Cedar Point :)!!!

Wow--a busted timber. Is it a wooden roller coaster?

I don't ride those anyway b/c of my neck (too jerky)--but I always wonder about the strength of the wood.

yes it is/was, and it's the only wooden coaster w/a loop!...

RideAccidents.Com is also a good source of info on theme park/amusement park/carnival ride safety.

agnes!

Yes Son of Beast is a wooden rollercoaster and way cool. It's been many years since I was there but I loved both the Beast and Son of.. I heard it stopped suddenly and people were hurt when they hit their seat restraints. I don't ride roller coasters anymore-I get my adrenalline fix trying to avoid getting hit by cars when I'm riding. :scared1:

Several years ago while on a school trip, I made the mistake of getting on the Son of Beast. It was awful! I made a deal with God: If he got me off that ride alive, I would never get on it again. He kept his part of the bargain, and so have I.

The cause of the accident was structural damage--apparently several pieces of the wood was cracked and splintered. The ride opened in 2000 and before the ride opened, Paramount's Kings Island had a law suit against the builder "stating it (Son of Beast) was structually unsound" http://www.wcpo.com/news/2006/local/07/09/kings_island_ax.html

I love roller coasters and will ride anything, but Son of Beast is way too rough for me.

OMG! I love this ride, and I so don't think it's that rough. In fact, I have always thought it was much smoother than I ever expected.

It's hands-down my favorite!   I haven't ridden it yet this year, and I'm hearing it may be closed indefinitely :sad2: :guilty:

ETA: Ok, local stuff and not rumors are just saying it will be closed for several weeks until they can rule out operator error, etc. Even then it could likely be fixed. Here's hoping! I know I'm not alone in enjoying it, although it appears that way on this thread thus far ;)

We were just at KI in June that is why the story interested me of what happened. We didn't ride any of the big rides because my DS is under 48'. But I know we would probably have stayed away from that one anyways. We (myself, DH and DS-when allowed for height) enjoy the steel coasters for smoothness. We live in Pittsburgh. This year our DS got to enjoy a beloved small wooden coaster called the Racer along with the Jack Rabbit. He is not tall enough for the ThunderBolt or Phathom's Revenge.
