AC casinos are closed

I just talked to my DH (a cage supervisor at Trump Plaza) and the casino started to close down at 7:30 this morning. He has to stay at work and nobody is sure what happens next. Oh, this state is CRAZY!

Hubby and I are headed to the Jersey Shore for vacation in about 4 weeks. He mentioned going to one of the casinos while we are down there since we haven't been in a while and I said "we'll see". Then we're watching the news and it mentions that the casinos were going to be shutting down because of the whole state government shut down and hubby was in shock. So I just looked and said "oh yeah, I just read that - we may not have a choice!"

Wait, there's a problem with the state so they're shutting down revenue sources? That's weird and unfortunate for any tourists that are in the area.

Without a budget the state doesn't have the authority to pay the workers. Therefore they can't work. My dsis is a probation officer in family court. She is technically unemployed until this is resolved. Hopefully it will be over this week.

Why would the state shut them and your lottery down and lose millions of dollars each day? Not to mention, now people are out of work with no available unemployment?

That was my first thought. But it's not because the casino employees are employed by the state, but because state workers regulate casino operations on site every day. Without those regulators, the casinos can't run. Does that make sense?

My parents had comp rooms booked for today. They called yesterday about cancelling and the woman on the phone INSISTED it wouldn't happen. They truely didn't expect it.

no., they are privatley owned but you have employees of the casino control commision which is run by the state on NJ (someone correct if i have that worng lol). You have employees of the CCC in the casinos at all times.. they cant run without them.

Casinos give approx 2 million a day to NJ... hmm so lets shut them down and go further in debt.

Motor vechicle and inspection stations are also closed. as well as state parks, campground and beaches. The lotto has also stopped.

Personally, I am going to take my day trips out of NJ this summer.. and givre my money to another state. This is going to leave a bad taste with alot of people.

They are doing political grandstanding, which will quickly be political suicide.

As far as the casinos, they are privately owned, but the problem is that the Casino Gaming Commision that overseas the operations and keeps tabs on the gambling IS state run. If there is no gaming commission, they MUST close.

This could have all been prevented, but it's the idiot politicians that have their agendas and don't really care about the residents of the state.

I am SO glad we moved out of the state 2 years ago!

There is an exception for essential services, like state police, etc. I never realized this before, but the casinos, although privately owned, are required to have state regulators on site while they are operating. These state regulators are not considered "essential" so they were furloughed. Thus the casinos cannot operate.
I really don't think this shutdown will last very long. All the publicity about people temporarily out of work and the lost revenue from casinos and the lottery will force the legislature and governor to reach an agreement.

Massachusetts has operated without a budget in the past, but it never effected the state like it's doing in New Jersery. Man, I feel bad for you guys down there!

The casinos were in court on Monday trying to stop the shut down but lost. Nothing was settled in the state yesterday (poor state legislatures had to work on July 4) so today was the shut down. All county and municipal offices are still open. So are all beaches except the state park beaches.

Is there a contigency plan for the employees if there is no agreement reached? This is just awful, and I thought PA was bad!!
