I was wondering if anyone would respond to me! Like I said, I try to believe the best in people. Really! But today at work, at lunch, in the store, etc....I've heard some really sad things said. I know everyone has a racist thought at one time or another, but then we calm down, and look at it rationally. I'm not saying anyone on this board was thinking what I wrote, but just gentley reminding.....peace.

The people who are raping, shooting, etc were most likely criminals before this all happened. It just saddens me that these truely evil people are actually hampering relief efforts! I am praying that those poor people are saved shortly!

I wil admit -- my sons came into the rooms and have seen the news -- and as they show the mobs of people in NO, one son remarked, "Why are all the dark people just standing around? And why are some stealing?"

He did notice they looked "different" than him. But he noticed that most were just, as he said, "standing around" and that they were disheveled and dirty and some were crying, some were shouting, some were dying... I had to explain to him that for the area the storm hit, these are the faces of the people that live there, just as when the tsunami photos all showed predominantly asian people. And I explained to him that because the area is very poor, many of these people couldn't get out of the city, or believed they had to stay with what little they had, or thought they would be ok... and now, whatever little they had was gone. It is important as our kids hear bits and pieces to determine what they are gleaning from all of this and make sure it's correct.

But you are right in that for some people, they will see what's there and perhaps make a false connection (like skyscrapers cause crime!) We had a massive flood here not too long ago. Many people at work were discussing it, especially about one part of the county wherein everyone in that area had to be evacuated, and it was an area of deep poverty so the likelyhood of them having any insurance, any means of compensation was nil. Whatever they once had was lost. A woman I (used to) work with comes into the office and hears the people discussing this. After listening for a while, she says in an exasperated tone, "Well I don't see what the big deal is anyway -- it was JUST a bunch of poor people."

I agree, but one really never knows what they will do until they are in that situation. I just hate to judge all of them because I can't say for sure what I would do.

Yes, I do know I wouldn't do that. I'm talking about the desperate attempts at shooting (some instances, not all) the helicopters to stop and save their families. I'm just imagining that it's pure survival instinct taking over at this point, and all rational thought has gone out the window.

The whole point is that you don't know who is doing what for what reason....just judging based on one group.

My other is just a reminder, because if you don't think that people are now really viewing this in a "racial" way, you are crazier than I was this morning.

I know now that it crosses people's minds that "oh look what those black people are doing" or whatever they say. I'm not saying people on here, but all over and it scares me and sickens me.

See, earlier this morning, I was called ignorant and color-blind when I didn't see this could turn into a race issue. That was very naive of me.

I'm not judging anyone, in fact, I said those thoughts have crossed my mind at one time or another (on personal experiences). And I don't believe for one second that you don't think it's crossed people's minds all over this country these past few days. It's not right, but it happens.

I hope everyone realizes that those that are looting......don't think for a second that if this happenend anywhere else, rich spoiled white kids wouldn't be doing the same thing. you know, the ones that video tape their crime sprees and vandalism?

I have no idea what has crossed people's minds, but I can tell you it never crossed my mind until you brought it up. I see innocent white and black people suffering, and it breaks my heart. I heard a child was raped. I don't know what color the person was who did it, and I don't care. We are all just human beings, and we need to start behaving as such. Defend black people with all your heart. I will too. But please don't defend shooting or rape because of stress.

I would rather not read your "freaking posts". I'm proud of you for not defending rapists. I forgot you had said that. It's just those wonderful people who are shooting at others. I don't know exactly what I would do in that situation obviously, but I think it is very naive of you to think that these people who are shooting are just wonderful people in a bad situation.

While you may not be defending them, you are making excuses for them, IMO. Their situation is deplorable. It is beyond words. However, they are all human beings and they all need to act like one. The people in the WTC on 9-11 were under considerable stress. I don't recall any of them grabbing their guns and shooting the people that were there to help them.

The people in 9/11 were not under these same circumstances. Were they without any food, water, shelter, communication and hope for 5 days? it's way too hard to compare these situations. and I'm not making light of 9/11, at all. I didn't think so, but seriously forgive me if I'm wrong.

I'd like to think I'm not making excuses, I think we will just never know what's it like until we are in that situation. but I think it really bugs you guys that I don't think everyone is a thug. sorry.

and also, while I see that no one is agreeing with me on this board , I know there are others who agree with what I'm saying.

if i'm in this situation, and my mom is dying in front of me, stay away then, 'cause i'll punch you in the face and knock you down to get her help. sorry, but it's true. (maybe, I don't know, it's never happened to me, thank God)

I also heard armed gangs were raping girls. I didn't realize that 80% of the people in the Superdome were from the projects. Did the res of the popuation get out? Or hold up in their homes and die?
I heard many of the people in the Superdome ahve decided to just tough it out alone and get away from the craziness in there.
