Above ground pool underlayment

Has anyone ever used anything other than sand as an above ground pool underlayment? There are a few products on the market, Happy Bottom, and a few others, and I've read a few suggestions about putting 2 inch thick blue insulation board under the pool and cutting it to size, then duct taping it together.

We are trying to avoid sand if we can, it will be difficult to get to our site, and it's a pain to level and not leave footprints in, and can shift over time. We had sand under our last pool, so we're open to trying something new. Any information, good or bad would be appreciated.

We had a above ground pool for about 5 years before we got an inground. We had a Happy Bottom and prema cove ,best thing we did. The bottom feels smooth and no feet indentations. Our liner lasted the whole 5 years and friends of ours had sand and had to replace theirs about every 2 years.

I got some 11/2" iso board to use for ours. Worked well. Bottom side forms to the ground, and when filled is nice and flat. Cushy too. Will show the seams, but we did not have any issues with it. Get the biggest pieces you can if you go that route.

So both of you did not use sand under either of these, correct? Just leveled the ground and laid either the happy bottom or the insulation? We're thinking this would be so much easier!

Just leveled the ground, pulled the weeds, the give in the board takes care of the rest. Used gorilla tape. Holds well.
