? about wedding gift

My cousin is getting married in San Diego this summer. We live in the midwest and I know the "going rate" for a gift here, but the cost of living is so different! What would be appropriate for a relative living in San Diego?

I don't think that makes a difference. I would get them a gift like I would anyone else.

If they a registered, get them a nice gift you can afford. That is what I would do.

I guess it may be simpler around here.

Oh, I will keep it within my budget, just wondered what people give in California. If they were getting married around here, I would spend $75-100 for a cousin.

I'm not sure if I will be invited to the bridal shower. My cousin is the groom and our aunts offered to have a shower for them and my aunt was told that it would be fine, if we pay for her to fly in for it. Is this standard protocol if you live far from family?

A cute idea, if the bride lives far from extended family, is to have a shower for her, without her there and then pack up all the shower gifts and send them to her. A million years ago, when I got married, my aunts and cousins in Ohio had a shower for me and did this. Those gathered for the shower could bring their gifts unwrapped, then they could wrap them after everyone sees them and ship them to the bride.

When my two nieces, sisters, one from Louisiana and the other in L.A., were pregnant 4 years ago, we had a shower for them and they both flew out (on their dime) to the shower. Otherwise, we would have just packed up everything and mailed it to them.

I grew up on the eastcoast (NJ) and lived in Southern CA when I married. As far as gifts went, we received money from our EastCoast family and friends, and gifts from the registry from our Southern CA friends.

To the op - give what you are comfortable with, and I'm sure the B/G will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

We only give gifts for showers and then cash for the wedding. Around here it is at least $150 to $175 per couple. More if you are closer or it's a relative.

Huh? When we got married in NJ we got about 50-50 gifts from our registry and cash.

I've never heard of only giving cash at a wedding, and I have lived on the East Coast my entire life.

From MY experiences here in New England, the bridal shower gets tangeble gifts - sometimes from the registry, usually not. Usually, the registry is used as a guidline for colors/styles, then a similar gift is bought elsewhere at a more affordable price.

I have never been to (or had & I've been married twice) a wedding where someone brought a gift other than a card with money in it.

I've lived on the West Coast most of my life, and have never been to a wedding where only $ was given. In fact, I would say most people bring gifts as opposed to money. And I agree that bridal shower gifts might be off the registry, related to a shower theme, or something personal for the bride.

From NJ as well. I had 219 people at my wedding and only got 5 gifts - from the out of country guests. I never heard of giving a gift at a wedding - it's only ever been cash.

This is a great idea, I will pass it on. It really is tradition for our aunts to throw a bridal shower and I know they would love to do something for the couple.

My standard wedding gift is a crisp 100 dollar bill. Let them use it for honeymoon or whatever else they may wish. Money is universal, who cares where the couple lives. The only time I've given anything else is if the couple requests that $$ be given to a charity of their choice in lieu of a gift.
