My DH and I are looking for a used TT. I know most of the basic stuff to look for (soft floor, sturdy frame, leaks, etc.). What I am not sure of is the workings of the thing. How do I know if the toilet drains correctly. What about the connections to hoses from the outside? How do I know if they are working properly? What are the questions I should ask myself and seller to make sure I am not getting ripped off? We are used to pop-ups not TT. All of the inner workings make me a bit nervous. What is your advice? I know you all are experts. :goodvibes

If they have a local campground near by ask if you can take it for a test run. Also, have the seller turn on the fridge, fill the water tank and turn on the water heater, have the A/C running and cold, This way you can see if all these are working including the faucets, microwave etc.. The other stuff, such as the sewer connections and stuff will have to be tested on a test run. Make sure you open cabinets and look inside for any signs of leaks. If it smells musty and mildewy, then it had or has a leak. Get up on the roof and check for proper maintenance, for cracking, rips, tears etc...

Also, a trick regarding the floor...where high heels!

Best thing you can do is take it for a test overnight. We just bought our fifth-wheel and the dealer let us stay at a local KOA for two nights (on them) to work out any bugs we found (it's a 2004) and then they fixed everything we found. There is no way to be totally sure you get everything tested and it's working fine--there's just too many things and if the dealer/person is standing watching you it can be nerve racking. We also decided to go with the Good Sam extended warranty - for around $250/year it's worth a little piece-of-mind when buying a used unit and a big price tag-IMHO. ;)

I never knew test runs were common. We will definitely do this. Fortunately we are in big hurry. We are probably done with camping for the season. DD3 is starting school soon and so am I. Proud mom went back to school!!! We just want to get one before we head back to the fort. In the mean time, if we really want to get away for the weekend we still have the pop-up. Is there a certain brand that is better than the other. We say some Puma brand and liked them. I just can't recall anyone having one on the dis. I think I need the Dummies book on buying one of these. :rotfl2:

We have a 2004 24E29 Fifth-Wheel. Haven't really done any research on TT, but it is definitly something you should do. Go to RV.net and put some postings on the TT board and you will get tons of helpful suggestions. Of course, brands, of the most part, are subject to the person buying them, but remember when it comes to TT and FWs you really do get what you pay for! Something you may want to watch for is how far the sewer drain lines are off the ground. You don't want to be crawlling around on the ground hooking up your sewer lines and if they are too low, your sewer hookup at the campground may be higher than your drain...bad problems result from this! :) Just one little thing we've learned from 30 years of camping.
