Many people have mentioned using them and my mom said something about not all places taking them anymore and that not everyone will give you change back for them, etc. Not to mention that she and I have been to several Disney stores and no one sells Disney dollars anymore........what's with that?? So is it a good idea to use travelers checks-will everywhere in WDW take them??

Your post is kind of confusing.

Just yesterday, I bought DD at my local DS with no problems at all. Each time I used traveler cheques they were accepted even at my local supermarket.

You should have no problems.

I've never heard of someone not getting change back after using travelers checks. Maybe your mom was thinking of GC. I used travelers checks on our disney trip back in 2001. I never had any problems.

There are 3 disney stores in the NYC area that I buy disney dollars from. I've had problems returning them at the 5th Avenue store, but never had trouble buying any.

I never had problems using traveller's checks. They're like cash... except that if you lost them, you can replace them within 24 hours.

DH & I always use travelers checks. We have never had any problem using them anywhere at WDW. They are very accustomed to seeing them. We have always gotten change back. As a matter of fact, we usually will cash a $50 travelers check at breakfast each morning and use the change as our pocket money for the day. Gift certificates on the other hand do not give back change, as I understand. I have purchased DS gift certificates for his Christmas to be used for our Jan. trip. We will probably just use them against our room charge so he can just pay for his purchases with the room key. As for Disney Dollars, our problem is that we do not have a Disney Store close by anymore.

IMO, if you plan on using Travelers Checks outside of WDW, get at least a portion of them in increments of $20.00. I had an issue at a McD's in May after leaving DVC VB, since they supposedly wouldn't accept any denomination (cash or travelers check) over $20.00.

We used them for our July 03 trip. Had no problem using them or getting change back from them. We got our in the $20.00 increments. Some places asked for ID when you used them but not all.

Thank you all for your responses! Now, I can take the money I have saved and get travelers checks with it-my local AAA office should be able to do that, right? About the disney dollars........been to the Disney store at our local mall here in Rochester, NY and they don't sell them anymore........said that WDW might start doing away with them?? My mom also checked somewhere else associated with Disney and they told her the same.

Yes, you should be able to get the VISA traveler's checks at your local AAA office. They'll waive the handling fee if you're a AAA member. Have a great trip!

Make sure you talk to a manager at the Disney Store if you want to purchase Disney Dollars. Since they're cash, most regular cast members don't have access to them - in our store (Raleigh, NC) they keep them in a locked drawer behind the cash register. I would be very surprised if Disney did away with Disney Dollars, or if your store no longer sold them at all. Perhaps they were out of them for the moment and that particular cast member was misinformed. I'd definately try calling and talking to a manager to see if you can get the true story.

Christianweecare - I think you could also use your son's GC to purchase Disney Dollars at the DS in the airport, in case you'd like him to have a little cash-type money for ice cream, etc.

Mom2alix- Thanks for the suggestion. We will be driving down so we won't be going through the airport. I guess we could purchase DD at WDW. I have even thought of having DS just put his GC on room key so he can just charge against them. He will have some pocket money for snacks. DS is poor working college junior.

You will not be able to use those GC at WDW. They are only valid for the Disney Stores. You can order Disney Dollars online or from the catalog and then use those in the hotel. A lot of guests do get quite a shock when they bring the TDS GC's to pay a bill and it is not accepted. Just giving you a head's up

I ALWAYS use travelers checks Funniest place I had use them was on my way out of town at the McDonalds Drive thru If anyone ever gives you a hard time ask for the Manager..

LOVETHATMOUSE-These are not Disney Store GC. I purchased them from WDW CRO. They state on the GC that they can be used anywhere at WDW-for room charges, dining, merchandise, etc. Also, I have called WDW directly and Disney Dollars cannot be purchased online or through the catalog. I don't mean to sound like I am disputing your word, just telling you what I have found in my research. I was told that Disney Dollars can be purchased at the Disney Store which we don't have anymore or at WDW guest relations. Anyway, the GC that I have are not the same kind of GC that you are thinking of. Thanks for your help!
