I got an 18. haircut today and I think it was the salon owner who did it. I liked the haircut he gave me the last time he cut it, so I wanted to give him a decent tip. BTW, I didn't have a shampoo or blow dry. I gave him 4., and he acted like he was thrilled...or the opposite....was that a customary tip?

I think traditionally the owner is not tipped, but in my situation, the person who had cut my hair for years bought the salon with another person. I didn't feel right to stop tipping her, so I continued as I always had. I tip 20%, rounded up to the next dollar.

I think that $4 was very generous. I generally tip 15% - 20%, depending upon the services and how much I liked the cut. 20% of $18 would have been $3.60.

I was always under the "old" impression that the owner of a salon did not get tipped, because he/she made money on the whole process(services, products, booth rentals, etc.), so wouldn't be dependent on tips as a sourse of income. The last time an owner cut my hair, she was frequently handeling business as well. I also brought in tons of referals.

Recently I have found that most places I get my hair cut, as well as my family, the hairdresser or barber, rent the booths. So I always tip. I have a friend who cuts my boy's hair (2X10) for $20 once a month. I tip her $5...she is very patient with my young children, and makes the whole experience great, and I know that this is a good tip. But getting back to the OP statement....I think that generally in a barber shop, for a cut (many, not all) tip $2-3. I think many people think 15% is sufficent for a dry cut.

But I think your satisfaction with the service should be your guide...I think you did right!!

::yes::

THe owner of the salon cuts my hair and has been doing it for several years. For a regular cut I give him 5.00 and when he highlights my hair I give him 10.00. I'v always heard that you don't need to tip the owner, but I feel funny not doing it. Even my manicurist owns her shop and I tip her too. Heck, I tip everybody, the hair washer, the hair cutter, the manicurist, anyone who does something for me , gets a tip in return.

Does anybody tip the dog groomer? I have always wondered about this but am not sure what the right thing to do would be.
Thanks

My hairdresser also bought the salon she worked at. I had always tipped her before, but after she bought the salon, she told me that she would no longer accept tips from clients.

She does charge more for a cut, etc. if she does your hair rather than one of the less experienced people that work for her.

there is a sign at my groomers about this. Its a discrete sign saying that tips are always appreciated.

I'm not certain what a fair tip is though. I've never tipped prior to dropping the dog off.

They charge $38 for the dog grooming , I'm not sure what a fair tip would be.

Cindy B, thank you for your response.
I have never tipped when having my dog groomed mainly because there are usually 4 girls in there, shampooing, cutting, and brushing and drying. I couldn't just tip one and it would get expensive tipping all of them. I am just curious as to what the majority of people do.

i am a professional stylist and i can tell you tipping varies way around.... first off, the price of the cut and tipping really depend where you live. if you live in NYC, everything is more than say a suburb of Amish country.
****there is one thing to remember: a LOT of people do NOT realize that hairstylists do NOT make an hourly salary. almost ALL work commission and tips--that's their salary.***** (heck, at least waitresses/waiters get a couple of bucks per hour!) we can usually tell how much you like your service by how much you tip. (unless we know you are "strapped"--then we'll forgo the tip for the 'repeat' business) also, as a previous salon owner, most of my clients still tipped me because running a business is costly. it takes awhile to get anything extra than a paycheck out of it. you have supplies, utilities, insurance, taxes and many other bills that come out of your own pocket when you're an owner.....after all that, then if you don't put anything back into the business, it's yours.
feel free to ask me any questions about tipping or hairstylists...you know, the things you always wanted to know, but were afraid to ask!!

I tip my hairdresser 20% because she always does an amazing job with my hair :p

haircutters I tip 5.00 for a wash cut and blow dry shampoo girl 2.00 and the dog groomer 5.00.

20% just seems like a lot. So if I pay $100 for hair coloring, I'm supposed to tip $20? I thought they received some sort of salary. Last time I tipped $12 for coloring. I typically tip $5 for a haircut that they charge $45 for. Is it my fault they raised the cost of a haircut and now I should tip more? Does this mean my hair person hates me? Ugh, there has got to be a cheaper way to do this. Do hairstylists really see nothing of the $100 or $45?

Hairstylists typically get a % of your $100 or $45 but generally not a salary. Tipping varies depending on where you live but 15-20% is typical. Yes, if the cost of the haircut goes up your tip should also go up.

There is a cheaper way, most parts of the country have at least one "discount" chain.

If you go to an expensive salon you'll pay more and tip more.

Sounds like you're tipping 10-12%, for most of the country that's low.

I just had my hair cut and highlighted today. The highlight was $90 and the haircut $50. I always tip 20% so the color person got $18 and the hairdresser got $10. That is pretty standard at the salon I get cut at.

I tip a minimum of 20% when I have my hair done. My stylist told me (as another poster mentioned) that he is paid by commission and tips only, NO hourly base salary. He is the most experienced stylist in a mall shop and he told me he only averaged $10 an hour when he worked a 40 hour week due to making nothing during slow periods. He recently started working part-time (28-30 hours a week) and told me he makes just as much as he did when he worked 40 hours a week, since he has enough clientele to fill up the 30 hours.

Re: the dog groomer, I have my dog washed at Petsmart and they have a tip jar there. I usually don't tip, but I did tip the last time because the woman who did my dog happened to be the only person in the grooming area when I picked him up, so I was able to just hand the tip to her. I tipped 15%.

I really had no idea it was supposed to be so much. I feel bad that I've insulted my hair person. I live in the Seattle area so I'm sure 10 to 12% must be insulting. She does a pretty good job (except for once.......) I originally went to her because her prices were low but now that they've gone up I guess I'll have to find someone else. **sigh** I really do feel guilty. I didn't mean to be insulting. If I do see her again, should I even mention it???

You guys have some salons!! Wow, a $50 haircut? I scoff at paying $40 and that's for me and my youngest son. I usually tip $4 or $5 regardless of whether I like the cut. I'm not very confrontational I guess but really once it's cut what is the point of complaining right? I just got it cut tonight as a matter of fact and I gasped when she made the first cut. I said I wanted to get rid of my split ends and even up my hair and that would probably entail cutting 2 or 3 inches. My hair hit right at my bra strap in the back and was slightly shorter on the sides. My hair is now slightly longer than Diane Sawyer's. I was more going for the length of Meredith Vieri from Millionaire & The View but the stylist didn't know who she was. Oh well, it's only hair and at least it grows fast.
