I always have my tips all sorted out before I go.

when I arrived at AKL, I had my tip ($1 per bag/item) all ready for bell services. Well, one person took my luggage in and then another took it up to the the room. Is this a standard practice in all disney resorts???

Yup! Not only at WDW, but at most hotels that actually have a bell staff that consist of more than the handyman/shuttle driver/emergency plumber (you know the type ;) )

Both should be tipped for their services.

I noticed this last year when we went to AKL. We ended up tipping both. We did the usual $1 per bag for each service. Is this appropriate?

This may be the case at many resorts, but I seem to have only encountered it at Disney hotels (even at Universal's Loews, I didn't have to tip two - perhaps I just lucked out there? Ritz Carlon? Nope. Rennaissance? Nope. Just Disney. )

This practice really irritates me. I don't mind tipping especially for good service but this two bell hop thing is excessive. The last time I checked in at Disney, one guy empted the town car and told me another guy would bring the luggage up so he was tipped right there. Well, we got in the room right away and the SAME guy brought the bags up (all within about 10 minutes)but of course he expects (and got) another tip.

And more than checking IN I especially find it irritating that when checking out of the hotel they do the same dang thing. Why on earth do I have to tip TWO guys - one for picking up the luggage and then literally handing it off to another guy at the front of the hotel instead of just putting it into the WAITING CAR.

I budget about $100.00 for tips for a four night trip.

Puffy2 - I noticed you stayed at the Poly concierge. Didn't the same person who unloaded the car load it on his golf cart and take you to the Hawaii buidling?

At the AKL and WL concierge, the bellman who unloads the car also takes you up to your room if your room is ready.

I guess I've been lucky. When checking out, my experience has been the bellman who takes the luggage from the room usually waits for the car to be brought up and he loads the car. Now this doesn't happen all the time, but it happened last week both times (when checking out of the AKL and WL).

I get the two person hand off all the time. I had it recently at two Hyatts in Washington DC and at the Marriott World Center in Orlando.

Of course my personal fav is when I have gotten the luggage out of the car and into the hotel and THEN they want to take it. Hmm... I did the hard part, nope you cannot deliver it to my room for a tip. (This was what they did at the Grand Floridian! After I unloaded my luagge I went on a SEARCH mission for someone to take my car. You know for what they charge to valet, I should not have to hunt for an attendant!)

At AKl Concierge, yes it was the same bellman that unloaded the car that took us up to our room. So that was a one person tip. Plus the tip for the valet of course.

At the poly, it was a two person event, so yes we tipped both.

I travel all over and this is getting to be the standard. I assume it's just a more efficient way to utilize their labor force. However, I only tip one of the attendants...usually the one who brings it to the room!

I'm so silly I didn't even know enough to BE caught up in the double bell thing. At check out we called for bell and I gave him 10.00. We'd called valet for the truck and it was waiting. I just got in the truck, gave the valet 5.00 and have no idea who actually loaded the back of it!!!!!! Do you suppose it wasn't the fellow I gave the 10.00 to????????????????????

WOW! I have only experienced this at AKL and not at any other deluxe hotel I've ever stayed at. It makes sense, though, instead of having the same person running up and down. Next tiem, I will be better prepared. They caught me totally off guard!

Actually my biggest "luggage handling team" was at the Dolphin in April. Towncar - tip for helping at the airport - only one big checked bag. Dolphin, belman who saw towncar coming, now we have the one checked bag, a cooler (grocery stop) and just a couple bags of groceries to go on the cart and wait while I check in. Tip for TTC (worth every penny esp with grocery stop) and tip for dolphin bellman #1 who puts stuff on cart. Thinking stuff gets stored oustide now like at wdw and I just call when I get the room. Wait no.... my stuff now goes to a different guy, bellman #2 who goes with me into resort and gives me ticket for stuff aside of check in line -small tip for him. Finally I get checked in and get room, this takes about 1 minute and bellman #3 takes my ticket, shows me to my room and tells me all the ins and outs of resort - another tip.....actually bellman #3 gave me a great tip as to how to get outside to pool and to tubbies really quickly from room. I wish I had tipped hime more!!

So on this trip it was TTC tip (again well worth it ) then not 1, not 2 but 3 different bellman who "touched" my bag...ugghh. Its not just at Disney either its everywhere.

betterlatethan,
at the Polynesian, a bell guy drove us to the hawaii building and our luggage was left at the check in desk - another guy brought the luggage up (even though the room was ready)
At the Yacht CLub concierge is where I encounted the exact same bell hop (who got tipped twice because he said it would be a different guy bringing the luggage up - quite frankly I shouldn't have tipped him again - he should have brought it right up when we checked in - in my opinion)

Hate the policy but always prepared with the extra cash.
