Hi there: I have something listed on E-bay and someone from Canada is very interested. I have only shipped to the US in the past because I am not sure what is involved to ship to Canada. Hoping someone here can share what is involved with a shipment to Canada and how can I figure the shipping??? This is not the first time someone has asked and I have always said, "Only ship to US" This time the person e-mailed again and I would love to help them out.
It is a music CD so we are not talking about a heavy item. I tried going to the USPS site, but I was lost!!?!?
Any help would be appreciated!!!
THANKS!!:)

It's easy & pretty cheap to ship to Canada, but you need to get a customs form from the PO. Tell the buyer it is $1 extra to ship to Canada. That's what I do, and it really isn't even $1 more. (assuming your item isn't heavy).
good luck.

Letter post to Canada, which costs in the neighborhood of a dollar more than in the U.S., cannot be insured.

For insurance you have to use parcel post which is somewhat more expensive.

If your auction says U.S. buyers and shipment only, you can make an exception on the spot for a non-U.S. buyer but you may say in the same email that you will disallow PayPal on the spot for that transation if you wish.

Disallowing PayPal will prevent chargebacks if the buyer all of a sudden felt that the postage already quoted and paid was too high or all of a sudden found out that there was too much import duty and decided not to pick up the package.

I would only accept paypal, not disallow it! With all of the problems with bad money orders from other countries, I wouldn't take them. You send them an invoice at the end of the auction with the amount of shipping, what would there be to dispute?

To prevent high duty charges on our end make sure it is labelled as a gift under 20 dollars. Then there is no extra taxes!

But labeling an item as a gift when it is not is a form of tax fraud on the buyer's end. I will only ship outside the country if the buyer understands that I will be listing the item and it's exact selling price on the customs form. Any buyer out of the country should take into account any additional duties/taxes that will be involved before deciding whether or not to bid on an auction.

Do this often enough to get caught and you'll have a lot of problems shipping out of the country. The post office has decided to do some spot checking according to a recent article I read. Any item found to not be a gift, will be kept by customs, and the sender will be prosecuted for mail fraud.
Besides..what does that say about your ebay business? I think it says you (you anyone that does this, not singleling anyone out) are not an honest person. People from Canada know what they will have to pay duty on when they buy..the responsibility is theirs.

I recently shipped to Canada for the first time. I always use delivery confirmation and they do not have it to Canada. This concerns me. I had agreed to ship global priority but I have no proof that it arrived.

For delivery confirmation to Canada, you can send the package as Letter Post (if it qualifies), but then you also have to send it registered with return receipt. For a 2 pound package, this more than doubles the shipping costs, but it does include some insurance. Global xpress Mail includeds tracking & delivery confirmation, but I think it costs around $40 for shipping, so not very cost effective.

There may be other ways (UPS, etc), but I understand the duties to the Canadian are very high with UPS, so I try to only ship using USPS to Canada.

Um.. that would be MAIL FRAUD, which is a federal offense here! I always put the amount the seller paid for on the label, I have never had any complaints or requests to do otherwise.

And, as far as shipping to Canada, I have shipped a lot and only had one problem just recently, where it was returned to me saying the seller moved. So honesly, unless you are shipping something very expensive, I wouldn't worry too much about it!

Shipping to Canada on a light item does usually cost around $1 more as a PP suggested. Up to a pound it is almost as cheap as shipping here, even 2 and 3 lbs compare the same as if I was shipping cross country here.

I would always put the real amount! I don't know much about how it works for international buyers, I also don't care, I am not buying it, they are, so they should know what is involved with taxes. I ship internationally and never had a problem with the customs forms.

I have had a few people say things didn't arrive, same as here in US. Nothing more. Never had a problem with an international money order, although I am happy to take paypal. Hope my luck continues!

I have had a couple people ask to mark as a gift, I just politely say I cannot. If they asked after they paid I just send it. Why risk my business and self for someone else.
