???? about sea sick kids

We will be crusing with our kids (13,11,8,6,3,2) and I was wondering if anyone had kids that have gotten seasick and what did you do about it? I have never been seasick but my husband has and I kow how bad it can be. If one of my kids gets seasick it could make the trip a disaster!!!

My DD (13) was seasick the first cruise. We gave her medication as soon as she was sick. I was seasick too.

The second time we went to acupuncture for a motion sickness treatment. It worked. The first night the ship was moving a lot. Everything was moving in the dining room and we didn't get sick.

It is better if you prevent it than waiting until you already are sick. What you want is anything with Meclazine HCL; Bonine, Dramamine are a few. I also suggest that you try whichever you choose before you get on the ship, in case someone has a reaction to it (very rare), then you can get something else before your cruise.
If you get seasick very easily you can get the patch that goes behind your ear.

What about 4 year olds. Do they make a patch for them as well. I am leary of the Dramamine for the little ones. Any guidance or suggestion on those who have traveled with little ones.

My dd got sea sick on our November cruise. I gave both of my dd herbal pills because when I asked the pharmacist about over-the-counter motion sickness medicine he pointed out that none of it was for children under 12. My only option for my dds (ages 6 and 9) was the herbal stuff, with no age limit. I also bought them both sea bands. I took Bonine. The first night I got sick, but no one else did. I thought that meant we were "home free" for the rest of the cruise! Nope! That didn't happen. On our last night the waters got rough. The captain came on over the speakers in our rooms and said that the waters would get "turbulent" that night as we crossed the Gulf Stream. WOW! They did!!!!!!!!! I felt queasy, but never got really sick. MY dd, age 6, never got sea sick the first three days, but she got REALLY SICK that night. She was in the bathroom throwing up for a while. That was even after 4 days of the band and herbal capsules. I wrote a thread about it when we returned. Someone said that they buy the children's Dramamine. My local Eckerd store didn't sale that when I left for the trip or I would have bought it. Now I know.............................

I've read on these boards that BENADRYL is the med of choice for young kids to cure seasickness. It's "doctor-recommended" from what I recall. Perhaps if you did a search you'd find more info.

I'm curious if Benadryl (a.k.a. diphenhydramine) would work for Adults as well.

Anyone know?

I read that about Benadryll on these boards too. I couldn't give my two dds Benadryll because they were both on their seasonal allergy medicine daily --Zyrtec -- at the time of our cruise. Our pediatrician said that I couldn't give the Benadryll with the Zyrtec. It would have been an overdose for my girls. I had to go with the herbal capsules and sea wrist bands.

We were on the Magic last month. We were very lucky because the seas were calm. However, since it was our 5 year olds first time on a cruise, we gave him 1/2 of a children's strength dramamine each day. Our ds also takes Zyrtec for allergies. Both his allergist and his pediatrician recommended the children's strength dramamine. It's sold over the counter at walgreens.

Have you asked your pediatrician about using the Transderm patch on some of your kids? I seem to remember them using it on my son last year as a pre-op med for sinus surgery. I wonder if they could use it on-board ship...hmmm. Of course, there is always Dramamine tabs or Phenergan suppositories(for vomiting).

There is nothing that will ruin a vacation like motion sickness.

We traveled during the Hurricane Francis extended cruise. On the entire trip we hit seas that were 2-4 feet and felt nothing. However, on one of the days we hit the hurricanes offshoot and had 12-15 foot seas. This did cause my youngest son (8) to get very sick. We called the doc after his sixth episode. They treated him with meds and gave him some powerade for rehydration. The meds made him sleepy and after his four hour nap he felt fine. We took no chances after that and for the next two days gave him chewable dramamine for good measure. He was fine the whole rest of the trip. He is prone to motion sickness and the seas were the worst the crew had ever experienced. You should be fine.

Our Dr. recommended Benadryl for our kids (the 3 and 4). She said traditional motion sickness medications tend to work unpredictably in young children.

That being said, my children did not have any problem with motion sickness. DD3 gets car sick easily so I was pretty worried about her, but she didn't even feel the motion of the ship. She kept asking when the ship was going to start going.

Hi .... what cruise are you going on. We are going on the 10 day Christmas Curise on December 18th. We too are from Connecticut. Regarding your question ... this is our first cruise, but are going prepared. I have purchased Bonine for all four of us.
