While most Rent/Trade postings suggest otherwise -
points are of no use or value to anyone except a DVC Member !!!
DVC points have no value by themselves and can only be used to make a reservation by the member who controls the contract holding the points.
Non-members can ONLY rent a reservation made using DVC points and the DVC member will always hold complete comtrol over that reservation until the guest has checked into the resort.
Members may transfer points to another member and relinquish any control over the points once the transfer is complete, but non-members will have no control over the reservation even though it is made in their name.
Trust is a key component of all Rent/Trade transactions. DVC suggests that a contract be used for rentals, but in the event that the renter does not have a contract, he/she should be aware that they will be held to all rules/policies of the resort and DVC (that provision is clearly spelled out in the member's ownership documents). I'd suggest that renters demand a contract spelling out all aspects of their transaction.
Since non-members cannot use points themselves, they are always in the position of using a reservation made by the member who then places the name of the renter on the reservation. This is the case whether the member makes the reservation today or simply changes the name on a reservation made months ago.
There have been minimal problems with transactions thru this site, but there have been a few- usually with misunderstandings about how the process works or by ignoring suggestions made to maximize the opportunity for a positive experience.
Please read the FAQ and all suggestions mentioned on the Rent/Trade Board. If other questions arise, feel free to ask them here on the DVC Board.
