DH and I will not be going to WDW during our 2013 UY. However, I have a friend who would like to take her DD and her 3 children, who are 3, 5, & 8 (their father died suddenly a few months ago and my friend wants to do something nice for them).

She came and asked me what I thought the best way to travel would be. She knows that DH and I do Disney almost every year, however I'm not sure if she knows we have DVC. There will be 6 in their party (3 adults and the 3 children), so they'll need a 2 bedroom. I suggested renting points from a DVC owner because they would get so much more for their money and the difference (at least to me, and I know to her) isn't that much in the big scheme of things.

I haven't said anything about personally renting her the points, as I am short 6 points to get her the reservation she wants. So I want to know, can I purchase those points, even though I am renting the reservation? I am thinking that I can, but I'm not sure. I don't want to offer to rent her the points unless I'm sure I can get them. In fact, I'm not sure I even want to offer to rent them to her as DH and I are planning a big trip the following year for our children & grands and we were going to bank those points to put toward our 2014 trip. If I don't bank them, then I am going to need to rent or transfer points for our trip.

TIA!!

You may rent up to 24 points to complete a reservation, regardless of whose name is on the reservation.

However, since you were planning on banking and using your own points anyway, I would go ahead and do that and perhaps help her in the process of finding somebody to rent points from (or use one of the professional brokers). Doing business transactions between friends can get messy sometimes ... if you do decide to rent her your points, be sure to use a contract.

If you purchase one time points from DVC, you can only do that at seven months out. You might want to direct your friend to one of the rental brokers.

Or you can have points transfered to your account and then book her the room. The brokers can also transfer points. I'm sure TTS does it and probably also David.
