Someone told me that after you pick your own pearl, you can pay to have it set in a ring. This is at either the Japan place (which I haven't even found) or the one by SAB at Y&BC, don't know which or is it both? So they said you could go there, pick your own pearl, then have them make a pearl ring out of it. Does anyone know if this is true? Anyone have any first hand knowledge of it and know the quality, cost, waiting time for the ring to be made (do you have to go back in a day or 2 to pick it up?) If this is true, it sounds like a pearl ring would be such a neat souvenier, but I've never heard of anyone doing it.

We did it at Japan. My daugher and I each picked an oyster and then they open it and measure the pearl. Then they clean it. I had ours made into a pendant (one for each of us). DH went back an hour later and they were done. I also saw them at a stand by the Y&B club. Our pearls were really pretty, I forget the actual size but dd got a big one and they made a big deal about it.

Yes, it is true! I am not sure about the one at Y&BC, but I do know there is one in Japan (or there was last time I was there). I used to get a pearl everytime we went when I was younger, the first year I had it made into a necklace, the second time I got double pearls in one oyster and made them into earrings and the third time I got a ring. And this was all before I was 13yrs old...lol....it was one of the most memorable parts of my early trips....I haven't done this in a long time, maybe the next trip I will go back! I think it is located somewhere in the Japan store (perhaps toward the middle or back), just ask I am sure someone will be able to direct you.

The place in Japan is inside the Mitsukoshi Department Store. I did one there and just did the pearl, but they have a lot of different necklaces and rings you can pick to have your pearl set in to. My friend who is here on the boards made a necklace, but I really can't remember how much it cost. If I remember correctly they had a range of items in different price ranges. It is really fun to watch people pick an oyster and see what they get inside.

I have done this twice in the Japanese pavillion and love the jewelry! Last Sept. I had a pearl ring made out of sterling silver. The setting was about $32 so with the cost of the pearl ($14), it came out close to $50 after tax. However, I wear that ring almost everyday and always get compliments on it. It looks lovely and I have not had any issues with quality. It has really stood up to daily wear, hand washing, etc.
This time, my sister and I both had jewelry made. I chose the dolphin pendant for $25 (no chain) and my sister chose a silver ring with cubic zirconia for around $30. We both recieved compliments on the jewelry as soon as we got home. It takes about 30 minutes for them to set the pearl, but it takes a while to dry completely since they use glue. We waited about 4 or 5 hours before wearing the jewelry. It really is a great souvenir!

I know they do it Japan, used to do it at Sea World (don't know about now), but I've not seen it at the Beach Club.

This is one of my favorite things to do in Epcot. The very first time I did it, I got twins, two pearls the same size. I had them made into matching necklaces for my DD and I. I am addicted to doing this. Over the past three years I've gotten like 15 pearls. DH and I each did one in Nov 05 and both got twins. DD and her best friend did it one year and made necklaces out of them. They were about 10 dollars a piece, not including the pearls. And DD best friend got a grey one!!!! I have decided to take all the ones I have at home and keep getting more and have them strung in a necklace for DD 16th Birthday. Something that will always remind her of our vacations. I have already talked to my local jewelry store and they are more then happy to string them for me. Even said that when we get more they will keep adding them for me. :flower3: pixiedust:

Yup they do this at the Y&B C...how do I know you ask, lol. Ask DH who cannot resist his 2 "little" girls! DD,8, had been saving her money the entire trip to do this. They also made a big deal out of size for hers and said DD, 15, was avg. After being talked into, lol...this woman was a heck of a salesperson I walked away DH however... 2 pearls at 14.95 each, big deal out of naming them etc. Then of course they had to be set and then a chain because we do not have any at home! I think that set him back about 200 bucks with tax and everything. If he had just listened to me and let 1 DD do this with her own money we could have gotten out of it for around 60 bucks! Oh well.

My family likes to do this too...One time I got a 9mm golden pearl. I had it made into a ring. i think the setting was around 100.00 dollars.

You can do this at Japan, Downtown Disney and the water parks. I didn't know that you could do it at Y&BC. It's great fun to see what you get. I have two necklaces, two rings and two pair of earings. The last time I was there I just got the pearls without being set in jewelry. The ring setting ran me about $100.00 apiece but they have lots of choices. The necklaces were around $20.00 and I don't remember how much the earrings were. One time we were there with my niece's little boys and I asked them if I could have the two pearls that were closest in size so that I could have earrings. I would them buy them another oyster. Well, they all agreed until they got their pears and then there was nothing that would make them let go of their pearls so I decided to try one more time and that was when I got my first pair of twins. So I got my earrings and they kept their pearls. To me it's almost as addictive as gambling. Just can't resist seeing what I get when that oyster is opened. Always pick the ugliest oyster they have. :yay:

DD did this on everytrip. She loved picking the pearl and then picking a setting. I know they have some that are expensive and some that are less. DD has a ring, necklace and a crystal oyster with her pearl in it. She loves it! This year our youngest DD who is 2 got her first pearl! WOW how exciting. Older DD swears pick the ugliest oyster for the prettiest pearl.

We did it last spring break and I got a "black pearl". The drum was sounded and everyone stopped to announce my pearl - very neat. I had mine put in a necklace. Cost ran around $32 I think. A lasting souvenir. :)

I have done this SO many times I have lost count. I have many peices of precious jewelry and pearls in every color that they come in. I have done it at the Beach Club, DTD and Japan in Epcot. I firmly believe that Japan in Epcot is the best....and NO high pressure sales people insisting that you have them set. I have gotten prettier pearls out of the tank in Japan, and several pairs of twins. I am now after the elusive black or blue twins!

I have enough to have them strung, but that will be a bit pricey, so I am holding off on it, but I still cannot resist picking a pearl or 2 whenever I walk past the Japan pavillion in Epcot.

DD did this at DTD and hers was set in a gold dolphin pendant. It is beautiful although it was expensive ($125).

Yes it is true and one of the most memorable experiences for our girls! Their grandmother gave them some spending money and I didn't want them to blow it a bunch of little things so when we saw this I thought it would be perfect and they did too. They each picked an oyster and watched with such excitement as she opened it. They had theirs made into a necklace and we still have them! :thumbsup2
