We are planning a family/extended family trip to WDW in January. My sister and her family (4) are going as well as myself and my family (6).

Sister and her family are flying down as they live about twice as far as we do. We are driving. Since they are flying they have decided that they are definitely going to stay on site and using dining plan. I'd love to but there is just no way we can afford to stay on site for the week so we will be staying off site and we are not using dining plan.

We want to be able to hook up together to do a couple of the character dining experiences together with all the kids. How can we make the reservations to be sure we are together? Will they let her reserve for all of us even tho we are staying off site? What do you guys think would be our best option to get the reservations together?

Thanks.

Yes she will be able to book an ADR for more than is in her party. Not a problem. At the restaurant, let the waiter know who is on the dining plan and who isn't.

To the bolded: Yes. You can make reservations for any party size and it is in no way limited to what you have on your resort reservation or who has/doesn't have a dining plan.

When you're dining at the location, they can split the check just like they would at any other non-Disney restaurant at home.

Do note that due to party size there will be gratuity added to the check. When splitting checks, this also get split properly.

And as for the best option, since she's staying on-site, she'll be able to book reservations for up to 10 days at 180 days before date of check-in. Since you're staying off-site, you'll only be able to book reservations 180 days before date of dining. This could give her a few days advantage on those combined meals and I'd suggest that she make them under her reservation number.
