? about Government rates on hotel stays

When a hotel lists a government rated discount, does the hotel stay have to be during a government function (like convention)? Or, can a government employee ust the discount for a hotel while on vacation? Thanks

You can use the govt rate discount at any time. Make sure to bring your federal ID because they will ask to see it at check-in.

I'm a school district grant coordinator, and I almost always use the gov't discount. Out of all the years I've used it, I've only been asked for ID once. Nonetheless, I always make sure I've got it with me (just in case).

I know some places require you to be on travel order to get the government rate (which is equal to travel per diem).

I have found it depends on the hotel. Some say you must be traveling on gov't business and others it doesn't matter. I either check the website for that information or ask when I'm calling. Sometimes the gov't discount isn't worth it when you can get a good internet rate right from the website so be sure and check around.

I have been using gov't rate everywhere I travel for the past 18 years. Only one time did I have trouble - at the Marriott Delray Beach March 2005, I booked on line, govt rate when I got there they said I had to put it on my govt credit card - I had printed the entire confirmation and reservation and NO WHERE did it say that.....when I got home from our trip - I looked at their website and that hotel had indeed added it. So its my fault if someone is trying to get a $400 room, in season for $150. So this year we will just go a little later not during high season....
