Excuse my culinary ignorance but... can someone explain what exactly a "flatbread" is? How is it different from a pizza?

Thanks!

My understanding is that a flatbread is a very thin n crispy version of a pizza with very different toppings.

Some of the pizzas I've had in the States have been "deep pan" or "pie" type. Also not all the flatbreads have a tomato sauce on them, I don't know if that makes any sense.

For example at California Grill they do a Chicken Ceasar flatbread which is Chicken Ceasar salad on a flat bread the only thing that this has in common with a pizza is that they are both round and baked in an oven of some description.

Dunno if they are the "real" differences but it helps me get over the confusion.

flatbread is more like a pita without the pocket. It is traditional middle eastern bread which is served with meats, cheeses and olives. They can be topped and used in a variety of ways. It is much thicker than a "wrap" which is a tortilla, which is made of corn or other vegetable bases to give them color and flavor ie: spinach, tomato, etc..

Pizza dough is more of a yeast dough. There are many styles of pizza from deep dish "pan" pizza which Chicago is famous for. Ther is Sicilian style which is a thick but very light crust and neopolitan style which ranges from thin to very thin - depending who makes it.

Flatbread and pizza dough are completely different in texture, taste, and recipe as I do not think flatbread has yeast in it, which is why it is "flat" bread!

Thanks. I see "flatbreads" are on the menu of Mama Melrose and Spoodles.

I think Fantasia Sam described very well the type of flatbreads that we've enjoyed at various WDW restaurants...CG, Mama Melrose, Wolfgang Pucks and Jiko come to mind. I do think the kind of flour used varies...Jiko certainly uses some kind of darker, mealier flour. The ones at Mama Melrose are very much like a thin crust pizza with an assortment of toppings offered. We've enjoyed them all.:D
