My DD18 is flying from Bangor, ME to Detroit with a connection through Philadelphia. US Air lists the on-the-ground time in between flights as 40 minutes. Is that enough time to change planes in Philadelphia? We've never been to this airport so I don't know if it's feasible or not. The other option would be the same departure from Bangor but with 3.5 hours on the ground in Philadelphia. What would you advise?

It is tight, but if everything's on time ,she'll be alright. If for some reason she misses the connection, she can get on the next one that you were thinking of booking anyway.

^ agree.

PHL is my home AP.

US air domestic uses mostly F with a little bit of D terminal. Best case she lands in F and leaves from F, no need for more than 5 minutes to make that connection. Worst case it's 10 minutes for a kid (young adult :) ) to walk from F to D or D to F.

Solo I always pick tight connections, with the fam in tow I might pick the longer one.

USAir domestic has B,C & F at PHL. Looking at today's schedule, Bangor to PHL comes in on B or C, PHL to Detroit goes out on B or F. F would be Air Wisconsin dba USAirways flights. I would avoid that one because it will be a longer walk.

When I was flying alot for work, I avoided connecting in PHL at all costs. There always seemed to be issues. I would connect in Charlotte even if it meant longer flights.

US Air uses terminals A, B, C in PHL and Terminal F for smaller regional jets. You cannot walk from terminal F to the other terminals without exiting security. There is, however, a shuttle bus between F and the other terminals that stays inside security.

I checked the flights between your destinations and the terminals vary depending on which US Air Express airline is actually flying the flight. I recommend checking the flight status for any day using the actual flight numbers to see which terminal will be used for that flight. If both legs use A/B/C, 40 minutes will be fine. If there is a change between A/B/C and F, 40 minutes can be very tight.

I also would not count on getting on the later flight if she misses the connection. Flights to Detroit are on smaller regional jets that are usually full.
