How does your MIL place her luggage in the overhead? All luggage is supposed to go in wheels-first or handle-first, so the longest measurement is perpendicular to the compartment lid and the plane's walls and so three similar-sized pieces can fit in each compartment. If it fits that way, fine - but if it only fits crosswise, she's wrong.

I'm not sure. I didn't pay attention to how she was placing the luggage. I was busy with my kids and our luggage. I was thinking she was wrong no matter how she placed it because even if it fit wheels first couldn't it take up space from the luggage next to it? If it was too wide maybe three pieces couldn't fit next to eachother?

I guess I'm just wondering why do the airlines have the rules if they don't make everyone follow them.

I was just curious what everyone else had experienced. I felt like all my planning and measuring was for nothing. We had even bought one new carryon for my son since his was too large with the wheels.

Like you , I also worry about the sizing issue with carry-ons, but it didn't sotp me from bringing an oversized bag that my Dh and I share.

My rolling bag will not fit in the AA sizer because it it is 10.5" wide, counting the wheels, and the maximum is 10". The other dimensions are fine (18" and 14" inches, for a total of 42.5" out of an allowable 45"). It fits fine in the overheard and because it is the only bag my DH and I share, even its width is less than allowed for 2 bags.

Because I was paranoid, I brought an extra packable (but non-wheeled) bag so that if we had to check our wheeled bag we could take everything in that bag on board. Of course, our bag was never sized and went on board no with problem, as it had many times before.

I will probably replace my non-conforming bag in the future but I expect that there may be changes to the TSA's rules about liquids this Fall, so I am waiting for that. Our current bag holds 2 baggies with our liquids in an outside pocket for easy access. If something else is allowed, another bag may work better in any event. -- Suzanne

I have seen Northwest refuse a carryon that was too big. I think it just depends on the agent working that day because I have also seen bags carried on that I am certain were way over the limit.
