We're going to MNSSHP later this month and DS12 is going as Anakin Skywalker. We got a really nice costume for him at Target, but I was thinking it would be a nice souvenir if he were to build his own lightsaber when we get there. :darth:

I'm pretty sure I've seen the BYO Lightsaber stuff both at HS (Tatooine Traders) and DD (One Upon a Toy) ... but since we aren't sure we're going to get to DD, I wanted to be sure that it *was* at HS, and that you had all of the same "options".

Also, DS12 is disabled, and a big part of the fun of having a lightsaber, for him, would be the noises it makes ... do the BYO lightsabers make sounds? Are there sound options?

I'd really like to get him one that makes sounds as it's swung, like the "real" ones do ... I'm pretty sure I've seen toy-store ones that can do this, and I hope the Disney ones can, too. :goodvibes

Yes, Tatooine Traders has a BYOL area. Only difference I noticed was the CM did it for you, rather than at DTD where you do it yourself but they'll help if you need it. I guess it's because they don't have a lot of room in the store at HS. BTW...I was there 2 weeks ago.

Yes, they do make noise and yes you can change the noise by changing the crystal inside the hilt. They have different sounds for the red, green and blue crystal. The crystal doesn't change the blade color, just the sound effects. So remember to take one of each color when you build one.

My kids have a dozen lightsabers from the plain $8 ones to Master Replica FXs and their favorites are actually the spring action ones that extend with a push of the button. Those also light up and make noises. They run about the same price as the BYOL at WDW and are found anywhere with a toy dept. That is what my son is going to carry with his Anakin costume this year. The BYOL ones don't have a belt clip and I know he'll get tired of carrying it and I'll end up with it if he can't clip it on his belt.

regards

We did the build your own lightsaber at Tatoine traders this summer and it was lots of fun. The CM did help to build it but my son got to pick out all his features that he wanted. You can even make a two-sided lightsaber, like Darth Maul's.

However, I would really recommend the build your own lightsaber kit currently sold at Target or ToysrUs. We just bought it for my son's birthday and it is has the same stuff as the things you get to pick at Disney, except ALL the choices are included. And it costs around the same price. My son loves it as he can keep making all kinds of different light sabers. It might make for a nice surprise at the hotel when you arrive!

Have a nice trip!

my 12 year old just built one of these on our September trip. The CM at the register paid great attention to detail as she checked us out. She made sure he hadn't fogotten any parts during the building process, and helped him install the batteries too. It turned out he had a defective lightsaber! She said there were several lately that had been defective, so they rebuilt a second one together. She was great ! Unfortunately it was only used for about a half an hour, and is no longer working, even after replacing the batteries. The lousy part is we didnt find out until we unpacked it from the suitcase at home. I would still go ahead and build it, but try it out several times and purchase it towards the beginning of the trip so you don't run into the same trouble we did.

Where in DTD can you do this?

DS built one at HS and played with it for a day before it stopped working altogether. Fortunately, it was early in our trip so we brought it to Once Upon a Toy in DTD and they let us replace it with no problems (we did have the receipt). :goodvibes
